College of Medicine and Health Research Day 2013

A very successful College of Medicine and Health Research day was held on Thursday 13^th June 2013 at the Western Gateway Building. The theme of this year鈥檚 conference was - The HRB Clinical Research Facility at UCC: Meeting Challenges in Patient Focused Research. All presentations related to research planned or in progress at the Clinical Research Facility, under the Directorship of Prof. Joe Eustace.

The conference was opened by Prof. Helen Whelton, Vice Head College of Medicine and Health. The theme for the morning session was 鈥楻esearch in Special Populations鈥� and the speakers included Dr. Deirdre Murray, (Baseline Study); Prof Colin Bradley, (DiGP Research Group); Dr. Maeve Rooney, (Omega 3 Trial); Dr. Sally Cudmore, (Research in Healthy Volunteers).  The second session focused on studies for regulatory approval and the speakers were Prof. Noel Caplice, (RESUS AMI); Dr Declan Soden, (Endove study); and Prof. Geraldine Boylan, (ANSeR). Prof. Anita Maguire also spoke about 鈥淣ovel Opportunities for Clinician Interactions with Industry鈥�.  

There was a moderated poster session at lunchtime with 80 posters.  There were three awards for best poster and each recipient was presented with a Gold medal. Congratulations to Jacqueline Lyons (School of Food and Nutritional Science), Anne Marie O鈥橣lynn (Department of Epidemiology and Public Health) and Maeve Crowley/Caroline Noone (Haematology, CUH). 

In the afternoon the speakers were - Dr. Denis O鈥橫ahony, (SENATOR); Dr. Gene Dempsey, (HIP);   and Dr. Patricia Kearney, (TRUST), all clinicians/academics leading large European grants. Dr. Anne Cody from the HRB gave a presentation on Research Funding for Clinicians.

The evening session included six brief presentations on active clinical research.  Presenters were Ms. Samantha Cushen, Dr. Niamh O鈥橰egan, Dr. John Cahill, Mr. Conor O鈥橲hea, Prof. Finbarr Allen and Dr. R贸n谩n 脫鈥機aoimh.

Thank you to Prof. Helen Whelton, Dr. Ronan O鈥� Sullivan, Dr. P谩draig Cantillon-Murphy, Prof. Willie Molloy and Dr. Liam Plant for chairing the sessions. 

The College Summer Bursaries (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience [SURE] Awards) were then awarded, to those of the successful 10 applicants who were in attendance, by Prof. John Higgins.
