Biography

Aonghus Lavelle is a Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience and a researcher at APC Microbiome Ireland.

Aonghus completed training in gastroenterology at the Mater Misericordiae 深夜亚洲福利久久 Hospital, St Vincent鈥檚 深夜亚洲福利久久 Hospital and Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar, during which he undertook a PhD looking at the gut microbiota in ulcerative colitis under the supervision of Professor Ronan O鈥機onnell at St. Vincent鈥檚 深夜亚洲福利久久 Hospital. This was undertaken in collaboration with Professor Paul Cotter, Dr Orla O鈥橲ullivan and Professor Fergus Shanahan at APC Microbiome Ireland and Teagasc, Moorepark.

Subsequently, Aonghus spent a year as a clinical research fellow at the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinic in Cork 深夜亚洲福利久久 Hospital and at APC Microbiome Ireland, where he was involved with the teams of Dr Liam Fanning and Professor Colin Hill looking at the gut virome in IBD. This was followed by a PRESTIGE post-doctoral fellowshipin Paris in the laboratory of Professor Harry Sokol studying various aspects of the bacterial and fungal microbiome in health and disease.

Research Interests

Dr Lavelle鈥檚 research interests include the gut microbiome in IBD, inter-kingdom microbiome analysis, colitis-associated cancer and the application of data science and statistical approaches to human cohort studies to improve experimental design.
