A research team  has secured funding for a new research project titled REGARD: Regional Strategies for Collaborative Anaerobic Digestion and Biorefinery Development in Ireland.

A CUBS research team led by Professor Valeria Andreoni, has secured 鈧709,932 in funding for a new research project titled REGARD: Regional Strategies for Collaborative Anaerobic Digestion and Biorefinery Development in Ireland.

The project will explore how Ireland can scale its anaerobic digestion (AD) industry in line with national climate targets, including the goal of producing 5.7 TWh of biomethane by 2030. While AD offers significant potential for renewable energy generation, it also contributes to the wider bioeconomy through the production of digestate, which can help reduce agricultural emissions.

Recognising Ireland鈥檚 diverse agricultural and regional landscape, REGARD will adopt a place-based approach to develop tailored, collaborative models for AD and biorefinery systems. The research will examine ownership and partnership structures that enable farmers, businesses, and local stakeholders to share both risks and benefits.

By combining data analysis, scenario modelling, and the development of a pilot co-owned AD-biorefinery facility, the project aims to deliver practical, region-specific solutions. Ultimately, REGARD seeks to support economic development, environmental sustainability, and Ireland鈥檚 transition to a circular, low-carbon economy.

Professor Andreoni said:

鈥淭he SEAI-funded REGARD project will develop region-specific strategies for collaborative anaerobic digestion and AD-biorefinery systems across Ireland. It promotes co-ownership models that enable farmers, communities and stakeholders to share risks and benefits, strenghtening local engagement. Its regional, scenario-based approach ensures solutions fit local resources and conditions. The project will advance renewable energy adoption and enhance resilience through sustainable bioeconomy practices.鈥
