UCC event to explore the science of humanity

19 Feb 2025
  • Cork Anthropology Day (+ Night) invites members of the public to discover the science of humanity.
  • Anthropology is the study of what makes us human, exploring the complexity of cultures across all of human history.
  • Hosted by 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork, the free event will explore the study of humans, human behaviour, and societies in the past and present.

Irish folklore, music and cultural practices will be celebrated at Cork Anthropology Day (+Night), a free public event designed to show the ways in which anthropology - the study of humanity, past and present - enriches our everyday life.

Through an immersive exhibition, live performances, and expert discussions, attendees will explore how anthropology not only preserves and celebrates our heritage but also helps us navigate the challenges of an ever-changing world.

Hosted by 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork (UCC), this event aims to highlight the role of anthropology in connecting past and present, fostering cultural appreciation, and offering fresh perspectives on what it means to be human.

It will take place at UCC Centre for Executive Training (The Old Savings Banks) on Friday, 28 February from 14:00 to 18:00.

Dr James Cuffe, UCC lecturer in Anthropology, said: 鈥淲hether you are curious about the study of human cultures and societies or an aspiring anthropology student eager to explore, this event promises something for everyone. Held in Cork鈥檚 historic Old Savings Bank, this experience will showcase the work of UCC鈥檚 staff and students across a range of disciplines - from archaeology to folklore, environmental anthropology to technoanthropology, linguistics to the study of religion.鈥

鈥淎nthropology equips us with the tools to navigate and solve complex social problems by bridging human experience with technological and societal change. It helps us understand diverse perspectives, adapt to new challenges, and create solutions that are both innovative and culturally informed,鈥 Dr Cuffe said.

Highlights include live music with Dr Aoife Granville and friends; a screening of a short film on 鈥楾he Dragon of Shandon鈥, discussion on local traditions and storytelling. As night falls at 6pm, visitors can take part in a unique Anthropology Night Walk, where expert anthropologists will guide you through the streets of Cork to uncover the hidden lives of the city after dark鈥攚hether it鈥檚 preparing to sleep, pray, or party.

Spots are limited for the walk, so be sure to secure your place in advance by signing up on .

For members of Cork鈥檚 business community, this event also offers valuable insights into the role anthropology plays in global companies like Amazon, Google, and Volkswagen - helping businesses solve operational challenges and identify emerging market trends.

Cork Anthropology Day (+ Night) is free and open to all.
