Migration and COVID-19 – EU Masters Course Launched, European ҹþ of Post-Industrial Cities
UCC, along with 8 EU partners in ‘The European ҹþ of Post-Industrial Cities’ (UNIC) alliance have developed a lecture series and Master Course for the Summer term 2020 on “Migration and Corona“. The initiative is part of a unique partnership to boost mobility and inclusion through teaching, research and community engagement across the Erasmus ҹþ Rotterdam, Koc ҹþ Istanbul, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, ҹþ College Cork, ҹþ of Deusto, ҹþ of Oulu, ҹþ of Zagreb and ҹþ of Liège.
ҹþ College Cork joined the European alliance and signed the UNIC mission statement earlier this year. Dr Jean van Sinderen-Law, Associate Vice President, Director of European Relations and Public Affairs at UCC, said that,
“UCC and Cork City Council are delighted to build on their existing relationships, particularly around the UNESCO City of Learning and the UCC Civic and Community Engagement agenda”.
As part of tbis EU wide Masters Course, Dr Piaras MacEinri, ҹþ College Cork, will engage students in learning about COVID-19 and vulnerable migrant populations: the specific case of asylum seekers in Ireland’s Direct Provision system. This multi-disciplinary social science course is accredited at Ruhr-Universität Bochum as a Master course with Prof. Dr. Ludger Pries as coordinator of the course. It includes a Video Lecture by one of the social science scholars of a UNIC university. Inter-university student working groups study specific topics like “How are images of migration and migrants changing due to Corona in public discourse in my country and city?” Results of such group work will be presented online/in video meetings or by papers.
