Dr James O'Sullivan to advise on national AI policies

Dr James O'Sullivan, Senior Lecturer in Digital Humanities at 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork, will be seconded to Ireland's Higher Education Authority (HEA) from September, where he will take a leading role in the development of new national policies on the use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.

The HEA, officially An t脷dar谩s um Ard-Oideachas, is the statutory body providing policy advice for higher education in Ireland and is responsible for leading the strategic development of the Irish higher education and research system. Dr O'Sullivan will be working with the HEA's National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. The National Forum is responsible for leading and advising on the enhancement of teaching and learning in Irish higher education.

The HEA is currently appointing secondees with expertise in a range of strategically important areas, including sustainable development, professional recognition in teaching and learning in higher education, and artificial intelligence. Dr O鈥橲ullivan will work with the HEA and the National Forum to develop a robust set of policies and guidelines for the use of AI in higher education.

Dr O'Sullivan currently serves on UCC's AI Task & Finish Group, chaired by UCC鈥檚 Director of Research Support and Policy, Dr David O鈥機onnell. The Task Group was convened by Prof. John Cryan, Vice President for Research and Innovation. Dr O鈥橲ullivan is also a member of the board of the Future Humanities Institute, for which he convenes the Digital Cultures, New Media, & Cultural Analytics research cluster.

Dr O'Sullivan conducts empirical research on literature and culture. He is currently Lead Researcher on , a Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network developed to train early career researchers in cultural and text analytics for identifying and interrogating how meaning is expressed in language across diverse contexts, as well as Principal Investigator for C21 Editions: Editing & Publishing in the Digital Age, jointly funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) and the UK-based Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Dr O'Sullivan is the author of  (Palgrave Macmillan 2019) and the editor of several collections, including  (Bloomsbury 2023). His research has appeared in a number of international peer-reviewed publications, including PoeticsDigital Scholarship in the HumanitiesDigital Humanities Quarterly, the International Journal of Humanities and Arts Computing, and Digital Studies/Le Champ Num茅rique.
