Carl Davis C.B.E Public Lecture

Film and Screen Media at 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork, in association with the School of English, UCC, the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, UCC and the Cork Screen Commission, is pleased to announce a public lecture by acclaimed composer, Carl Davis C.B.E.

As well as a busy conductor of some of the world鈥檚 great orchestras, Carl Davis is one of the world鈥檚 leading composers of music for film, television, theatre and ballet. He is well known for the music he has composed for many silent film restorations, including the Charlie Chaplin Mutuals; Abel Gance鈥檚 epic 1927 film, Napoleon; Hollywood, the 13-part series on American silent films produced by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill; the 1925 versions of Ben Hur and The Phantom of the Opera; and MGM鈥檚 greatest silent-era hits, Flesh and the Devil (1926, featuring Greta Garbo) and The Big Parade (1925).    He won a BAFTA for his music for The French Lieutenant鈥檚 Woman (1981) and also composed scores for such contemporary films as Scandal (1989), The Trial (1993) and the Irish-set Widow鈥檚 Peak (1994).

Carl Davis鈥� work for television has been extensive: from music for Jeremy Isaacs鈥� groundbreaking documentary, The World at War (1973-4), to work on television films and mini-series such The Naked Civil Servant (1975); The Far Pavilions (1984); Pride and Prejudice (1995), Cranford (2007), and Upstairs Downstairs (2010).    With Paul McCartney he composed the 鈥淟iverpool Oratorio鈥� in 1991, and has also written music for a wide range of contemporary theatre and ballet.

Mr. Davis will present an illustrated talk on his work, including screened excerpts from the restored Chaplin films, in the Film Studies Auditorium, Windle Building, Main campus, UCC at 6pm on Monday December 16.
