Film & Screen Media's Third International Alphaville Conference

12 May 2017

Thursday 18 May and Friday 19 May, the O'Rahilly Building, UCC

#Cinema is Dead
New Ways of Showing, Watching and Telling.
The Third International Alphaville Conference.

Is cinema dying, is it dead, or is it just different?
It appears we have been listening to a century-long death knell and have been encountering the end of cinema as we鈥檝e all known it for decades. A more astute question might be, 鈥渨hat even is cinema anymore?鈥 Critics are filling up the internet-scape and academic journals, lambasting (or defending) the constant modification of a form of visual media which arguably looks entirely unrecognisable today in comparison to its original debut in the late 1800s. The tools are changing, the speed is changing, the media is changing, everyone can do it, anyone can watch it, and even the message is changing with a changing society. Bearing this in mind, is cinema truly dead or, perhaps, 鈥渕ore alive than ever, more multi-faceted, more abundant, more omnipresent than it has ever been鈥 (Dubois, 2010). We are excited to host the 3rd Alphaville Conference in May 2017, exploring these essential questions about the fundamental nature and current state of this billion-dollar industry.
