We are delighted to launch a sample of featured research and activities across the Future Humanities Institute in the academic year 2024 - 2025. The arts and humanities perform a key leadership role within the research ecology at UCC. We have long been at the forefront of interdisciplinary and innovative research.

Visit of Yoshitaka M艒ri and Tomoko Shimizu (Tokyo 深夜亚洲福利久久 of the Arts) to Cork and UCC

Animals on Ice: Extinction in an Age of Cryoconservation (PI: Dr. Sarah Bezan) is a 2 year interdisciplinary project that explores how meanings of extinction are shifting in light of recent technological developments in cryoconservation. Through art-science exploration, the collaborators Sarah Bezan, Adam Searle (深夜亚洲福利久久 of Nottingham), Robert McKay (深夜亚洲福利久久 of Sheffield), Peter Sands (深夜亚洲福利久久 of York), and Lucy Mercer (深夜亚洲福利久久 of Exeter) worked together to examine cultural and textual representations of thawing/freezing in relation to biodiversity loss.

This half-day event explored how we know and interpret difficult, recent pasts in the North of Ireland, focusing on two main themes: institutional abuse; and gendered experiences and sexual violence.

Friday September 5, 2025 saw a community of scholars and artists working in and with sound gather in UCC for (Un)Silencing: A Symposium on Sonic Practice & Research. 

Dr Stephen Roddy of the Radical Humanities Laboratory and the Department of Digital Humanities, 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork and his frequent collaborator Dr. Brian Bridges of Ulster 深夜亚洲福利久久 publish their work on deriving an ethically grounded framework from the field of Cybernetics in the volume Artificial Media: Emerging Trends in Narratives, Education and Creative Practice in Springer’s series on Cultural Computing.

Congratulations to Dr Kevin Cawley, Senior Lecturer in Korean Studies and Director of the Irish Institute of Korean Studies, on the publication of an outstanding review of his latest book: The Emplantation of Catholicism in Pre-Modern Korea - Texts, Teachings and Gender Relations by the journal Religious Studies Review.
