Not every founder starts with a tech background or a business plan. Some start with a classroom, years of observation, and a deep sense of purpose. Meet Stephen Feeney, founder of The Flourishing Man, a start-up focused on the emotional wellbeing of school-aged boys.
The Birth of The Flourishing Man
A primary school teacher since 2012, Stephen saw firsthand the growing challenges boys face鈥攍ow self-esteem, emotional shutdown, difficulties communicating, and pressure to perform masculinity in unhealthy ways. Over the past five years, he鈥檚 immersed himself in the men鈥檚 wellbeing space, culminating in a Master鈥檚 degree in Applied Psychology (Coaching and Positive Psychology).
鈥淚 believe that equipping young men with the necessary skills to thrive and become better citizens in our society is so important,鈥� Stephen says. 鈥淧ositive psychology offers practical tools to support boys' personal development鈥攁nd that鈥檚 what The Flourishing Man is about.鈥�
Seeing the Need
Recent conversations sparked by the Netflix series Adolescence have only highlighted the urgency. 鈥淚t鈥檚 opened up space for conversations that were once avoided,鈥� Stephen says. But he adds a note of caution: "Calls to make it compulsory viewing slightly miss the point. We need a more structured and focused approach that fits schools鈥� real needs."
The Flourishing Man meets this need by offering pilot-ready programmes that schools can trial through after-school clubs or curriculum-aligned workshops. The longer-term ambition: a digital platform that makes these resources more accessible, scalable, and impactful.

With a clear mission but a product still taking shape, IGNITE offered the structure and momentum Stephen needed.
鈥淭he structure and accountability have been really important for me,鈥� he says. 鈥淗aving dedicated time and support to focus on market validation, pilot development, and refining my message has helped me move far more quickly than I would have on my own.鈥�
