Abstract

Cancer is often understood in terms of its clinical and human toll, but its economic consequences for societies, workplaces, and families are much less visible. My research examines the hidden economic costs of cancer, including productivity losses from premature deaths, disruptions to paid and unpaid work during illness, the economic value of informal caregiving, and the financial strain experienced by patients and families. Using global data and economic modelling, my work estimates how these impacts translate into billions in lost productivity and substantial social costs across countries. These findings highlight that the burden of cancer extends far beyond healthcare systems into labour markets, households, and wider economies. Understanding these hidden costs can help inform policies that strengthen cancer prevention, support patients and carers, and protect economic wellbeing.

*Bus Stop Chat Series

The ISS21  (Society, Health Equity and Political Economy) research cluster will host a series of online Bus Stop Chats, from December 2025 to May 2026. Each of these informal lunch-time events involves a member of the SHAPE cluster presenting and discussing an area of their research to an interested and largely non-expert audience.
