Dr Mary Tumelty and Dr Annie Sorbie awarded funding for new project exploring the crisis within the healthcare workforce

Dr Mary Tumelty, Senior Lecturer, 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork, and Dr Annie Sorbie, Senior Lecturer in Health, Medical Law and Ethics, 深夜亚洲福利久久 of Edinburgh, have been awarded funding by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) as part of the Ireland-Scotland Bilateral Network Grants.

The RSE announced on 26 February 2025 that 63 exceptional research projects had been selected during the autumn 2024 Research Awards open call.

RSE Vice President, Research, Professor Anne Anderson OBE FRSE commented: 鈥淭he RSE鈥檚 Research Awards Programme is crucial in supporting Scotland鈥檚 vibrant research community. These awardees will drive forward knowledge, address global challenges, and make valuable contributions to Scottish society. On behalf of the RSE, I congratulate these outstanding researchers and their international collaborators, and I look forward to following the outcomes of their work.鈥

The collaborative project titled, 鈥楻egulating for the Workforce of the Future: Addressing the Healthcare Workforce Crisis in Scotland and Ireland鈥 aims to explore the tripartite relationship between (i) professional regulation; (ii) its role in addressing the workforce crisis; and (iii) the promotion of an economy that values the wellbeing of patients and professionals. 

The healthcare workforce crisis has been ongoing, and its realities became more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic when widespread recruitment campaigns were launched and existing healthcare professionals were redeployed.

Research by the suggests NHS Scotland is struggling to meet the ever-increasing patient demand and the says that there is an 鈥榰rgent need for action鈥 to deal with the workforce challenge.

The Ireland-Scotland Bilateral Network Grants, created by the Royal Irish Academy and the Royal Society of Edinburgh and supported by the Scottish Government Office in Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs, aim to strengthen cooperation and learning between excellent researchers, academics, and practitioners in Scotland and Ireland.
