Dr. Mohamad Saab, Senior Lecturer and Director of Graduate Studies at School of Nursing & Midwifery UCC conducted two studies having developed and launched the E-MAT virtual reality (VR) game and the 鈥極n The Ball鈥 campaign in collaboration with a number of national and international researchers.
Dr. Saab developed E-MAT, a 3-level educational game delivered using a VR headset with voiceover and two controllers. E-MAT stands for Enhancing Men鈥檚 Awareness of Testicular Diseases and the game takes place in a virtual apartment. In the past, Dr. Saab tested this game with university students and staff on two occasions who described E-MAT as 鈥渦ser friendly, engaging and suitable for men from various socioeconomic and educational backgrounds鈥.
Dr. Saab said: 鈥淭his is the first time VR gaming is being used to promote men鈥檚 health, hence the importance of the E-MAT study, particularly among athletes engaged in field games such as hurling who are at an increased risk of testicular injury and diseases鈥.
Dr. Saab also launched the 鈥淥n The Ball鈥 campaign as an inclusive community鈥恇ased campaign to raise awareness of testicular diseases, that is 鈥渢o promote men鈥檚 awareness of the normal look and feel of their testicles, the most common testicular symptoms and the importance of testicular self-exams and of seeking medical help for symptoms of concern鈥.
