Opening Doors to Healthcare Careers at the Access UCC Easter School
Transition Year and 5th Year students explored hands-on healthcare workshops, simulation training, and career pathways during a two-day experience hosted by the College of Medicine and Health.
As part of Access UCC 鈥榮 Easter School, the College of Medicine and Health was thrilled to host 44 Transition Year and 5th Year students from its partner Schools over 2 days. Students participated in a series of workshops coordinated by the College of Medicine and Health Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group.
Both days, students attended an interactive workshop, where they learned about different healthcare careers and programmes through interactive exercises. The workshop was delivered by staff from dental nursing, physiotherapy, nursing and midwifery, speech and language therapy and pharmacy, giving the students insights into potential future careers in healthcare.
On Wednesday, students participated in a workshop in the Pharmacy Building. This session included a series of practical activities, from role-playing a patient-pharmacist scenario to exploring tablet compositions.
Friday, the ASSERT Centre, a world-class simulation facility for healthcare education, research and training, hosted the students. Students were exposed to a simulated emergency, requiring them to respond by assessing injuries, checking the patient鈥檚 heartbeat and applying bandages, and a practical skills session, where they learned basic surgical techniques, such as tying a reef knot and practising suturing.
Feedback from students was excellent, and the College of Medicine and Health staff were delighted to contribute to the annual Access UCC Easter School, which allows young people to experience both life and facilities at UCC.
