When done deliberately, it is cheating, since it is an attempt to claim credit for work not done by you and fails to give credit for the work of others. Plagiarism applies not just to text, but to figures, tables, maps, formulae, or any representation of ideas in print, electronic (including the internet) or any other media, including work done by other students. Whether deliberate or inadvertent, plagiarism undermines scholarship, is a form of academic misconduct, and conflicts with the ethos of the ҹ޸þ. In almost any academic pursuit, you learn from the ideas and the work of others. Therefore, in preparing any work to be presented as part of an academic module, you must rely on other peoples work to develop your own arguments. It is imperative, however, that this work is fully acknowledged, following the standard Harvard referencing practice within Geography (see the Guide to Essay Writing - HYPERLINK "/en/media/academic/geography/documents/undergraduate/GuidetoEassaywriting.pdf" /en/media/academic/geography/documents/undergraduate/GuidetoEassaywriting.pdf). At a minimum you must indicate when any material is being quoted directly by enclosing it in quotation marks . in the case of text, and cite the source. You must also acknowledge the influence of other sources even when they are not being quoted directly. References must be provided at the appropriate point in your work - it is not enough simply to list the sources at the end of your work. Collusion is a form of plagiarism. If you allow someone else to copy your work, this is collusion and both parties are guilty of plagiarism. Also, if you present work as your own individual effort, where it has in fact been developed jointly with others, this is regarded as collusion. This would obviously not be the case where students work as groups and submit one assignment as a group. The Geography Department takes all forms of plagiarism and collusion very seriously. Staff within the Geography Department can, and do, check submitted work for plagiarism. Ensure that you understand how to reference sources used in your work, check the guidelines on the Departmental website and consult a member a staff if you are still uncertain HYPERLINK "/en/media/academic/geography/documents/undergraduate/GuidetoEassaywriting.pdf" /en/media/academic/geography/documents/undergraduate/GuidetoEassaywriting.pdf Ensure that you have read and understood the Departmental and ҹ޸þ policies on plagiarism and collusion, and that you agree to abide by the regulations and penalties as stated. The UCC Plagiarism policy can be found at HYPERLINK "/en/exams/procedures-regulations/" /en/exams/procedures-regulations/ Geography Department Plagiarism and Collusion Penalties 1. On identifying a possible piece of plagiarism or collusion the lecturer/supervisor will inform the student in writing (by email to the ucc.ie address provided to all students) that they suspect a breach of academic standards, and will invite the student(s) to meet with him/her to explain the possible breach of academic standards. In such cases, a third party (usually a staff member) may be invited to attend the meeting as an independent, non-contributing observer. 2. If the explanation is satisfactory and no plagiarism/collusion is found to have occurred the matter will end there and the student(s) will be informed as such by the lecturer/supervisor. If the student admits that plagiarism has occurred the appropriate action outlined below will be taken. 3. If the explanation is not satisfactory, the lecturer/supervisor will inform the Plagiarism Committee of a possible breach of academic standards and attach all relevant documentation (i.e. original student work, sources of plagiarised material etc) with a recommendation that one or more of the following actions are taken: If there is only minor plagiarism (e.g. one or two paragraphs extracted verbatim from a book/paper/website and not referenced, or up to maximum 5% of overall length of the essay / work submitted) a 10% penalty will be imposed; If there is major plagiarism (up to half the essay copied verbatim or with only minor changes of language) a mark of zero shall be assigned for the work submitted, with an option to repeat for a maximum mark of 40%, with submission within a month of the date on which the essay is returned; If a student has been found to have copied work from a peer that constitutes a significant portion of the assignment (e.g. the output from a GIS assignment), either with or without permission, a mark of zero shall be assigned for the work submitted, and an alternative assignment shall be set for a maximum mark of 40% with submission within a month of the date on which the assignment is returned; If there is a significant amount of copying (in excess of half the essay) a mark of zero shall be assigned for the work submitted without an option to repeat prior to the next Examination Board meeting; If there are very serious issues (for example a dissertation, or multiple occasions of plagiarism) the ҹ޸þ Discipline Committee shall be informed. Note that copying of maps, diagrams or other graphic elements, without due attribution of source, will also constitute evidence of plagiarism and is thus subject to the above sanctions. Except in extreme circumstances, incidences of plagiarism in 1st year assignments will be dealt with by the appropriate lecturer/tutor according to the actions described above. All incidences of plagiarism in 2nd and subsequent years that occur for work for which the mark is worth in excess of 20% of the module content will be reported to the Plagiarism Committee; plagiarism on work that is worth 20% or less of the module will be dealt with by the appropriate lecturer/supervisor according to the actions described above. The decision regarding the imposition of penalty and whether to forward the matter to the ҹ޸þ Discipline Committee rests with the lecturer/tutor or the Plagiarism Committee as appropriate. 4. If the Plagiarism Committee determines that it may be necessary to involve the ҹ޸þ Discipline Committee, the Plagiarism Committee will advise the student(s) of this decision in writing and will invite the student(s) to meet with the Plagiarism Committee prior to contacting the ҹ޸þ Discipline Committee. 5. If the Plagiarism Committee is satisfied with the explanation given by the student(s) the matter will not be forwarded to the ҹ޸þ Discipline Committee and the student will be informed in writing. However other penalties can still be imposed. 6. If the student(s) accepts the penalty, a brief report on the circumstances of the case and the penalty imposed will be prepared either by the lecturer/supervisor and/or the Plagiarism Committee and will be lodged by with the Departmental Office. The student will be informed in writing that a report is being kept on file, which will be taken into consideration should subsequent incidences of plagiarism be reported. 7. If the student(s) is unhappy with the penalty imposed by a lecturer/tutor, they can directly contact the Chair of the Geography Department Plagiarism Committee, Dr Fiona Cawkwell, at HYPERLINK "mailto:f.cawkwell@ucc.ie" f.cawkwell@ucc.ie. If the student(s) is unhappy with the penalty imposed by the Departmental Plagiarism Committee they may choose to request the Student Records and Examinations Officer to review the case. The Student Records and Examinations Officer will invoke the formal ҹ޸þ Discipline Committee procedure, itemised in points 5 through 11 of the Policies and Regulations: Breach of Examinations Regulations document, available at: HYPERLINK "/en/exams/procedures-regulations/" /en/exams/procedures-regulations/ 8. If the Plagiarism Committee decides to forward the matter to the ҹ޸þ Discipline Committee, the same procedure identified in the previous point will apply. Penalties may include those identified above but may also include: (a) Setting aside all or part of the overall examination while permitting the candidate to take the examination again at the next available opportunity or in the following year (b) Suspension of the candidate from the ҹ޸þ for a period not exceeding two years.
