It works closely with the Irish Medicines Board to facilitate situations of personal importations of medications, where these are legally being supplied or imported. Visitors, including students staying for a period of time, may carry with them up to three months supply of their medication. They should, ideally carry a copy of their prescription to facilitate answering any questions by Customs officers, should that arise. This imported quantity should be the only amount of that medication that they import in this manner during that three months period. Anyone carrying in excess of a three months supply is considered to be carrying in excess of what would be a personal use amount. Unaccompanied baggage, including medication, including express delivery services, is subject to Customs control. Cold chain medicinal products should be adequately packed and marked to ensure that the quality of the product does not degrade while in transit, especially in varying temperatures, as may arise by air transportation. The Irish Medicines Board and the Revenue and Customs Service attempt to facilitate genuine importations. "Personal importations" is a greatly abused facility, mainly through the advent of the Internet pharmacies, many of whom do not operate under official regulation. A guide is that up to a three months supply is acceptable. It is recommended that the student will bring this with him/her and will have a copy of a prescription detailing the dispensing of the product. It is recommended that if a person is in Ireland more than three months and need additional or a continued supply of medication then they should ideally have had a check-up with their medical practitioner before being prescribed further medication. It is understood that students often stay for longer periods and consume medication that may not be available in the EU, though an equivalent usually is. In such cases, where their medical practitioner, who is in the US and not Ireland, requires that the student continue the same medication regime this should ideally be dispatched from a family member who has obtained the prescription and the dispensed product from an authorised pharmacy, or the physical dispensing pharmacy, rather than by an Internet pharmacy. As cases are different in many instances, the Irish Medicines Board will deal with each coming to its attention on its merits and seek to ensure that there is no delay in the medication getting to the student. Arranging that a medication be prescribed/continued by a Doctor in Ireland If the student wishes to bring only a limited (e.g. one month) supply from the US, but wishes to obtain supply of medication here, then they must attend an Irish doctor to be assessed and the Irish doctor can then decide if they are in agreement with the treatment and may or may not proceed to issue a prescription. A prescription issued by a physician in the students home country will not be dispensed by a Pharmacy in Ireland. The prescription must be issued by a doctor in Ireland. It would be usual practice to continue a prescription issued elsewhere, as long as There was clear and sufficient detail about the patients medical condition and medication provided to the Doctor in Ireland from the prescribing physician in the students home country The doctor in Ireland is in clinical agreement with the indication for, and dosage of the medication prescribed. Some of the circumstances (there may be others) where a Doctor in Ireland may choose not to continue the medication are as follows The medication is not licensed for use in Ireland, or not licensed for the therapeutic indication given The medication is usually only administered by a Consultant (Specialist/Internist) e.g. Roacutane anti-acne treatment is only prescribed under the direction of consultant dermatologist in Ireland Bee and Wasp venom or other de-sensitizer injections are only administered by a Consultant (Specialist/Internist) (note there is only one adult clinical immunologist available in the Cork region, and this is available only as a fee-paying private patient, thus possibly involving a waiting time of weeks to months and a considerable financial outlay. Appointments with a Consultant (Specialist/Internist) are requested by a referring family practitioner or student health physician once the student has been seen and assessed in Ireland. Exceptionally, on occasions a Consultant may agree to accept a referral in advance of the student arriving in Ireland. The doctor does not agree with the therapeutic indication For further details re the importation of medication contact the Irish Medicines Board Irish Medicines Board, Kevin O'Malley House, Earlsfort Centre, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2, Ireland.
