Outline

Module Objective: Development of knowledge, understanding and skills in Advance Care Planning and Advance Directives.

Module Content: Background to Advance Care Planning, ethical and legal issues, implementing an Advance Care Planning Programme.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Critically discuss the rationale for Advance Care Planning
  • Delineate the steps involved in undertaking Advance Care Planning and completing an Advance Care Directive
  • Critically evaluate the ethical and legal issues that arise in relation to Advance Care Planning
  • Understand the process of systematically implementing Advance Care Planning models in Long Term Care settings.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: Continuous Assessment 100 marks (1,500 word written assignment - 90 marks; E activities - 10 marks).

No formal written Examination.
Compulsory Elements: Continuous Assessment.

Orientation: Asynchronous orientation prior to commencing the module

Requirements

Open to registered health care professionals in Nursing, Midwifery, Medicine, and Clinical Therapies or other allied disciplines.

Applicants who are practising health care professionals must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (e.g. the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (active registration), the Irish Medical Council, the Health & Social Care Professions Council (or equivalent regulatory body for pharmacists, occupational therapist, podiatrists, speech and language therapists etc.)) Applicants from allied disciplines must provide evidence of professional certification. 

Applicants who are under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as for the Degrees in Nursing or Midwifery, as set out

Admission to the module(s) will be subject to internal university approval processes on the recommendation of the Head of School.

Applicants for Nursing and Midwifery CPD modules who do not hold an up-to-date IELTS certificate showing the requisite Academic Board approved CM&H scores must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years.

*** Applicants for MH6016 must satisfy the following:

Normally hold a Honours primary degree (minimum of a Second Class Honours Grade I): Applicants with a Second Class Honours Grade 2 will also be considered on a case by case basis.

  • in a relevant subject (e.g. nursing, medicine, pharmacy, clinical therapies, philosophy, law, theology, social sciences)
    OR
  • in any discipline and either possess a postgraduate qualification in a relevant field or show evidence of at least two years' work experience in a relevant field.

Applicants for MH6016 must be practising professionals (Nursing, Medicine, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Education or other allied disciplines) with registration with the relevant professional regulatory body.
