What are microcredentials?

12 Jun 2026

Microcredentials are gaining popularity across Ireland and in workplaces, but what are micro-credentials, and who should consider enrolling on one?

What is a microcredential?

A microcredential is short, accredited programme that recognises learning in a specific subject area.

Designed to support lifelong learning, microcredentials can help you develop new skills, update existing knowledge or gain expertise in areas of professional and industry demand.

Microcredentials are typically worth between 5 and 30 ECTS (credits), at level 6-9 on the National framework of Qualifications (NFQ) and are delivered at 深夜亚洲福利久久 level. They are designed to be flexible, accessible and relevant to today's rapidly changing workplace.

Many microcredentials focus on areas where skills shortages exist, helping individuals to reskill, upskill or pivot into new roles and sectors.

What do I gain by completing a microcredential?

Unlike some short courses which offer a Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Attendance, microcredentials are accredited and carry ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits, which are recognised internationally.  By completing a microcredential, you can:

  • Earn 5-30 recognised credits (ECTS)
  • Gain university accredited learning in a focused subject area
  • Develop skills relevant to your career or industry
  • Demonstrate your knowledge and expertise to current or future employers
  • Access part-time, flexible, stackable study options.

Flexible Learning for Busy Adults

Microcredentials are designed with adult learners in mind. Microcredentials are a fantastic option for adults who are trying to study alongside work, family and other commitments. Programmes are typically shorter than traditional university qualifications, allowing learners to gain valuable skills and recognised accreditation in a shorter timeframe. Most microcredentials are delivered part-time, in an online or in a hybrid/blended format.

What does 'stackable' mean?

Some microcredentials can contribute towards larger qualifications. This means that credits earned by completing individual microcredentials may be stacked towards a larger award such as a Postgraduate Certificate, or even Masters degree.

This allows learners to build their qualifications more flexibly, over time, studying at a pace that suits their personal and professional circumstances.

Microcredentials can also be taken as standalone programmes, providing focused learning in a specific area without committing to a longer course of study.
