Outline

Module Objective: To facilitate students in developing a critical awareness of the contemporary issues in gerontological nursing.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Critically discuss the concept of health promotion as it relates to older people.
  • Summarise the main elements of rehabilitation and explain the rehabilitation of common disorders affecting the older person.
  • Critically evaluate issues in relation to the recognition, prevention and management of abuse and self neglect in older people.
  • Critically discuss the role of the family in the care of the older person and the role of the nurse in supporting the patient and family during the transition from informal to formal care.
  • Critically explore end of life care and evaluate the nurses role in meeting the spiritual needs of older people.
  • Argue issues in relation to sexuality as it relates to older people.
  • Critically explore the effectiveness of complimentary therapies for use in older people.

Module Content: Health promotion and positive ageing, rehabilitation, interface between primary and secondary care, the transition from informal to formal care, informal care and family carers, elder abuse and self-neglect, complementary therapies, end of life issues and palliative care, sexual health and sexually transmitted infections.

Module Delivery Method*: Wholly face-to-face, Programme/module with no on-line or web-based technology use, content delivered in writing (hard copy) or verbally (face to face).

  • 8hrs Lectures/Workshop
  • 92hrs Distance Learning
  • Discussion Board Preparation and Participation
  • Required Reading, Assignment Preparation and Submission
  • Self-Directed Learning.

Assessment: Total Marks100; Continuous Assessment 100 marks (Oral Presentation 90 marks; e tivities 10 marks)

Requirements

Open to registered health care professionals in Nursing, Midwifery, Medicine, and Clinical Therapies or other allied disciplines.

Applicants who are practising health care professionals must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (e.g. the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (active registration), the Irish Medical Council, the Health & Social Care Professions Council (or equivalent regulatory body for pharmacists, occupational therapist, podiatrists, speech and language therapists etc.)) Applicants from allied disciplines must provide evidence of professional certification, where appropriate.

Applicants who are under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as for the Degrees in Nursing or Midwifery, as set out here

Admission to the module(s) will be subject to internal ÉîÒ¹ÑÇÖÞ¸£Àû¾Ã¾Ã approval processes on the recommendation of the Head of School.

Applicants for Nursing and Midwifery CPD modules who do not hold an up-to-date IELTS certificate showing the requisite Academic Board approved CM&H scores must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years.

 

Fees and Costs

The fee for this programme is €400

  • This is payable on application (unless you are sponsored/funded)
  • This fee is fully refundable if the programme does not run or you are not offered a place on the programme
