Outline
Module Objective: To expand the nurses specialist' knowledge and skills in leadership, management and practice development in order to co-produce evidence based, safe and person-centred quality care.
Module Content: Developing a shared vision for person-centred care-: contemporary issues in mental health nursing, attitudes and values, recent local, national & international developments in mental health nursing practice, education and research, developing and articulating a philosophy of care in the specialist setting. Co-production, approaches to practice development, clinical supervision, critical reflective practice, portfolios. Quality improvement, clinical governance, effective workplace culture, clinical audit. Leadership, change management, the role of the mental health nurse as change agent and advocate, team working, problem solving. Translating recovery guidance into mental health practice. Contemporary models of service delivery. eMental health.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Articulate their philosophy of specialist mental health nursing practice to inform and develop their vision of specialist mental health nursing practice.
- Critically examine a range of contemporary issues and policy developments which impact on the current and future practice of mental health nursing.
- Critically evaluate models of change management and their applicability at an individual, team and organisational level.
- Identify and critically analyse core leadership and management competencies required by the mental health nurse in their role as a change agent when developing specialist practice.
- Critically review the process of quality improvement and the quality frameworks applicable to the mental health services and demonstrate how this knowledge may be applied to clinical practice.
- Apply recovery principles when working with and implementing change with service users, families, mental health service providers and the voluntary and community sector.
Assessment: Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment 200 marks (Presentation - 120 marks; e-tivities - 80 marks).
