Outline

Module Objective: Provide clinical nurses with the theoretical and practical knowledge required for assessment and management of patients with cardiorespiratory conditions.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the application of nursing knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of patients with cardiorespiratory conditions
  • Demonstrate the application of nursing knowledge and skills in supporting a patient's cardiorespiratory status.
  • Critically evaluate clinical signs of cardiovascular and or respiratory dysfunction and early warning signs
  • Critically analyse current nursing practice with regard to cardiovascular and respiratory conditions in surgical and medical settings.
  • Evaluate the role of the nurse in the prevention of cardiovascular or respiratory problems.
  • Evaluate current policy and strategies concerning cardiovascular and respiratory conditions and appraise their relevance to nursing practice.

Module Content: Holistic physical assessment of a patient's cardiovascular and respiratory status, epidemiological factors surrounding cardiovascular and respiratory conditions in Ireland, policy and strategy initiatives in managing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, early warning signs for cardiorespiratory dysfunction, nursing interventions in managing cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, diagnostic investigations (e.g. 12 lead ECG interpretation, arterial blood gas interpretation) acute cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, urgent interventions for acute cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, supporting respiratory function, chronic cardiovascular and respiratory disease management, management of cardiovascular and respiratory conditions in the surgical setting.

All postgraduate courses contain some element of blended learning. This means that the module is delivered online using our virtual learning environment Blackboard (teaching and learning strategies include module study guides, discussion boards, audio/visual resources and online assessments/activities). This also includes face-to-face contact with lectures for workshops.

Prior to commencing the module each student taking a blended module will be provided with an orientation to Blackboard and training on how to use the online technology within the course.  IT support will be given to students throughout the duration of the course. 

The 2026 workshop and timetable dates are shown below as an example. Details of the 2027 timetable will be made available closer to the programme start date. Days/Dates are subject to change.

  • Day 1:  Week 33  –  Friday 20 March
  • Day 2:  Week 34  –  Friday 27 March
  • Day 3:  Week 37  –  Wednesday 15 April

Assessment: Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment 200 marks (Seminar/Presentation: 180 marks; E-tivities: 20 marks).

Requirements

Applicants who are practising nurses must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (e.g. the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (active registration).

Applicants who are under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as for the Degrees in Nursing or Midwifery, as set out here

Admission to the module(s) will be subject to internal university approval processes on the recommendation of the Head of School.

Applicants for Nursing and Midwifery CPD modules who do not hold an up-to-date IELTS certificate showing the requisite Academic Board approved CM&H scores must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years.

These modules will not necessarily run unless minimum recruitment targets of 10 students are achieved.

This module is open to registered general nurses only, who work in a non-critical care area (i.e. ward-based). 

Fees and Costs

The fee for this programme is €900

  • This is payable on application (unless you are sponsored/funded)
  • This fee is fully refundable if the programme does not run or you are not offered a place on the programme
