Outline

Module Objective: To expand students' knowledge and critical thinking skills in the use of a wide range of recovery-focused psychosocial interventions when working with individuals and their family, friends and/or supporters.

Module Content: Application of the principles of structured psycho-social interventions underpinned by the recovery ethos and the development of a therapeutic alliance through the process of assessment and evaluation of a persons and their friends' families and/or supporters needs. For example; in the application of the principles of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Open Dialogue, Family Therapy or Family-centred care.

Assessment: Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment 200 marks (1 x 3,000 word Casebook (180 marks) and E-activities (20 marks)).

Compulsory Elements: Continuous Assessment.

Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 20% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the applicability of a wide range of psychosocial interventions in specialist mental health nursing practice and critically discuss the respective theories and principles underpinning a range of psychosocial interventions.
  • Critically evaluate the quality, safety, and effectiveness of a wide range of psychosocial interventions.
  • Critically appraise and evaluate current research and best practice evidence when applying the skills of psychosocial interventions.
  • Integrate the principles and practices of partnership and/or co-production into one’s current work with service users and their families, carers and/or supporters.
  • Critically discuss the development of a working therapeutic alliance with service users and their families, carers and/or supporters.
  • Apply the principles and processes of engaging service users experiencing mental distress, taking into account the problems encountered by individuals and their families, carers/supporters in establishing trust and understanding because of factors such as their gender, ethnic background, or age.
  • Critically discuss a range of approaches such as recovery orientated, strengths-based or trauma-informed care when working with service users and their families, carers and/or supporters in specialist mental health nursing practice.
  • Evaluate the factors that may help or hinder recovery and critically reflect on one’s own specialist practice in relation to these.
  • Conduct a comprehensive mental health assessment and formulate a collaborative treatment plan utilising the general principles and processes of evidence based psychosocial interventions.

 

Requirements

  • Applicants must be practising nurses with evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
  • Applicants for Nursing and Midwifery CPD modules whose main language is not English and who do not hold an up-to-date IELTS certificate showing the requisite Academic Board approved CM&H scores must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years.

Fees and Costs

The fee for this programme is €900

  • This is payable on application (unless you are sponsored/funded)
  • This fee is fully refundable if the programme does not run or you are not offered a place on the programme

Applications are accepted in two rounds.

  • Round 1 closes on 26 June and Round 2 closes on 28 August.
  • If all places are filled by eligible applicants by the Round 1 deadline, the programme will not open for Round 2.
  • For round 2, applications will remain open until the final deadline or until all places are filled, whichever occurs first. Early application is strongly advised.
