Sc茅l lem d煤ib: Gerard Murphy's Early Irish Lyrics Revisited.

A Symposium to Celebrate the 65th Anniversary of the Publication of the Anthology.

The event will take place Friday-Saturday, 29-30 October.  

[Friday from 12.15pm to 6pm and Saturday from 12pm to 5pm]

The symposium will be streamed live via MS Teams.

Themes and topics will include the reception of Murphy's edition of Early Irish Lyrics during the course of the last 65 years, the cleric living with his cat Pangur B谩n, St Colum Cille on his 1,500th birthday, St 脥te and the infant Christ, the Caillech B茅rri's musings on youth and age, the thwarted lovers L铆adain and Cuirithir, nature poetry, vision poetry, pit-falls when translating medieval texts, poems from the Finn Cycle and Acallam na Sen贸rach (the colloquy of the Fianna and St Patrick), love poetry, lament, otherworld poems and the voice of Suibne Geilt or Mad Sweeney praising the River Garbh.

 

The symposium will conclude with readings of a selection from Early Irish Lyrics in the original language side-by-side with readings of Modern Irish or English versions of the poems. This particular session will also include some music and one or two other surprises.
