23.2 Reflection of light

To see how an image is formed by a plane mirror, try running the ActivPhysics OnLine interactive exercise .

'Reflection' in Chapter 23 of Understanding Physics refers specifically to how light behaves when it strikes a highly polished surface. It is important to distinguish between this phenomenon and 'diffuse reflection' (or scattering) of light from a rough or uneven surface; we see most illuminated objects through this latter effect. This distinction is illustrated in the Molecular Expressions Interactive Java Tutorial .
