Prof Aideen Sullivan's 'All About The Brain Team'- Relay for Life
鈥屸屸孭rofessor Aideen Sullivan's All About The Brain Team' has been invited back to take part in the UCC Cancer Society'sannual event Relay for Life which begins on this Friday the 26th of February. 'We'd love to have ye on board with us again, your team's enthusiasm and energy blew us away last year!'
The 'All About the Brain team' which comprises of Neuroscience students and staff once again lead by Professor Aideen Sullivan will set up camp at the Mardyke on Friday afternoon ready for a 6.00pm start.
To raise funds for the Cancer society All About the Brain Team will hold a cake sale at their team tent on Saturday, so get baking now, bring all your culinary creations to the BSI first floor on Friday morning.
Online donations are encouraged at Aideen Sullivan's All About The Brain online donation site

The UCC Cancer Society run the Relay for Life event each year to help raise essential funds for the Irish Cancer Society and to also raise awareness about Cancer. Teams of 8-15 people in relays walk laps of the Mardyke track over 24 hours, starting at 6.00 on Friday 26th February and finishing the relay on Saturday 27th at 6.00pm.
The event consists of 3 main parts. Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.
- Celebrate is where the survivors celebrate and walk the opening lap, previous years have had up to 100 survivors walk this first lap.
- Remember is where those lost to cancer are remembered, all lights around the track are switched off and light from candle bags circling the track illuminate the event. Messages from loved ones are written on the bags. A ceremony follows and silent laps are walked in rememberance.
- Fight back, is where the energy gets cranked up and the fun and games begin, including a midnight soccer tournament called the midnight cup.
Come along and support the 'All About The Brain' team as they raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.
Dr Shane Hegarty's Dublin Marathon for Parkinson's Community

Marathon Update
I was delighted to complete the Dublin Marathon on behalf of Move4Parkinson's last Monday after all the overwhelming support and generous donations from friends,
family and public. I struggled over the line after 4 hours and 25 minutes in my first, and definitely last, marathon. I am hugely grateful to everyone who has helped raise over 鈧1,700 to date for a fantastic charity. If anyone would like to join our fundraising effort, I encourage you to donate via the below link. Thanks again for all the wonderful support! I really appreciate it.
Shane.
Dr Shane Hegarty's Dublin Marathon for Parkinson's Community鈥
Parkinson鈥檚 disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, with over 8,000 people in Ireland living with Parkinson鈥檚. Parkinson鈥檚 is a progressive 鈥宯eurological 鈥宒isorder, which robs people of their ability to control their own movements, but also causes other debilitating physical and psychological complications. At present Parkinson鈥檚 is incurable, with symptoms marginally controlled using a combination of drugs, therapies and occasionally surgery.
For People with Parkinson鈥檚 (PwP鈥檚), it is crucial they learn how to achieve their best possible quality of life. Through the support of an active Parkinson鈥檚 Community in Ireland, we can empower PwP鈥檚 and their families. By creating the BRAINTALK project Dr Shane Hegarty, Dr Gerard O鈥橩eeffe and Prof Aideen Sullivan brought the Parkinson鈥檚 Community together to exchange and disseminate knowledge, and to improve the management and research outcomes of Parkinson鈥檚 disease. We now hope to continue to support the Parkinson鈥檚 Community through this fundraising event, in which Dr Shane Hegarty will run his very first marathon in Dublin on Monday 26th of October.
BRAINTALK have been inspired by a number of PwP鈥檚 and Parkinson鈥檚 charities in Ireland and abroad, but none more so than Move4Parkinson鈥檚 whose services are centred on improving PwP鈥檚 understanding of their illness and teaching them how active self-management can reduce symptoms and enable them to have a better quality of life. Shane has thus decided to raise funds for 鈥Move4Parkinson's Foundation Limited鈥 ().
You can donate by visiting the online fundraising page at
Any donation no matter how small is hugely appreciated.
Many thanks in advance for your support.
Dr Shane Hegarty.
