Dr Harriët Schellekens' research paper features in the New York Post, Fox ÉîÒ¹ÑÇÖÞ¸£Àû¾Ã¾Ã and Irish Times

The research paper by Dr Harriët Schellekens and her team in the APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre, entitled 'Bifidobacterium longum counters the effects of obesity: Partial successful translation from rodent to human' which was published in the 'Lancet EbioMedicine' journal recently, has attracted quite an amount of media interest, with profiles appearing in The New York Post, Fox ÉîÒ¹ÑÇÖÞ¸£Àû¾Ã¾Ã and The Irish Times. 

Dr Schellekens and colleagues Professors Cryan and Dinan identified a novel isolated bacterial strain, Bifidobacterium longum APC1472, with promising beneficial anti-obesity effects in a preclinical mouse model of high fat diet-induced obesity and in a human cohort of healthy overweight and obese individuals. Noteworthy, the B. longum APC1472 was able to reduced fasting blood glucose level, normalize active ghrelin levels and reduce the cortisol awakening response, which are dysregulated in obesity. The interest from the media has been widespread.
