Congratulations to Professor Yvonne Nolan, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, and APC Microbiome Ireland who was invited to present her research on the role of gut microbiome in Alzheimer鈥檚 disease at the Society for Neuroscience conference in Chicago on 7^th October 2024.

In her lecture entitled 鈥�The role of gut microbiota and hippocampal plasticity in Alzheimer鈥檚 disease: lessons from fecal microbiota transplantation studies鈥� Yvonne shared latest findings from her research group showing that a gut microbiota signature in Alzheimer鈥檚 played a role in cognitive symptoms and neuroplasticity. Experiments carried out in her lab show that symptoms of Alzheimer鈥檚 can be transferred to a healthy young organism via the gut microbiota and thus that symptoms of the disease may be, in part, be caused by alterations in microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract. Hippocampal neurogenesis is highlighted as a converging cellular process regulating systemic and gut-mediated factors in Alzheimer鈥檚.

Other research leaders in the field Professor Rima Fathi Kaddurah-Daouk (Duke 深夜亚洲福利久久), Professor David Holtzman (Washington 深夜亚洲福利久久 in St. Louis) and Professor Katrine Whiteson (深夜亚洲福利久久 of California, Irvine) contributed to the symposium 鈥�What does the microbiome tell us about prevention and treatment of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease?鈥�

As an additional distinction, the symposium was selected as one of very few to be highlighted in the annual meeting issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. Yvonne and her fellow speakers鈥� co-authored review can be found .

The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is the world's largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to advancing understanding of the brain and nervous system. With >30K delegates, its annual meeting is one of the largest scientific conferences in the world. SFN 2024 was held at McCormick Place, Chicago, which is the largest convention centre in North America.
