Research
‌‌
Beginning from a sound bedrock of valuable received knowledge the department aims to explore and impact on the contemporary discipline of folklore and ethnology through original, innovative and quality research and teaching. This cannot be achieved without publications that encourage a wider discussion and debate on crucial cultural processes nationally and internationally and contribute new knowledge to the base of the discipline. Nowhere is this more evident than in the published output of academic staff and postgraduates. The quality of the research carried out by members of the department has been acknowledged in various ways. The innovative work of one of the founders of the department, Associate Professor Gearóid Ó Crualaoich, The Book of the Cailleach, has also been welcomed by a wide readership of artists and academics alike. Locating Irish Folklore by Dr Diarmuid Ó Giolláin won the Katherine Briggs Folklore Prize, for the best folklore book first published in the UK and Ireland, in the year 2000. Several books written by Head of Department Dr Stiofán Ó Cadhla received accolades, Cá bhFuil Éire? Guth an Ghaisce i bPrós Sheáin Uà RÃordáin one ‘Book of the Year’ by the national cultural organization, Cumann Merriman in 1999, while and An tSlat Féithleoige: Eolas agus EalaÃn an Dúchais, another was given first prize at the Oireachtas Literary Competition in 2010. A Faculty of Arts Research Achievement Award was won by Diarmuid Ó Giolláin in 2004. The work of Dr Lillis Ó Laoire, Ar Chreag ar Lár na Farraige, recently translated as A Rock in the Middle of the Ocean was originally submitted as a doctoral thesis in the department. Dr ClÃona O’Carroll published edited interviews with some of Cork’s inhabitants as How’s it Going Boy? in 2006. Dr Marie-Annick Desplanques published Folktales from Western Newfoundland in 1985. The department publishes a postgraduate journal of some standing µþé²¹²õ³¦²Ô²¹ (see the link on these pages); as part of ongoing research projects in the urban community CD-Rom, DVDs, CDs and short films have been published.
