Japanese Ambassador visits UCC Arboretum
Japan's Ambassador to Ireland, Mr Norio Maruyama visited UCC recently to mark an agreement between Japan's National Diet Library and UCC. While at UCC, the Ambassador had the opportunity to enjoy the international-accredited UCC Arboretum.
Mr Maruyama was able to explore a selection of the 2,500 trees in the collection including a Katsura tree and some Ginkgo biloba trees, both native to Japan.
Dr Eoin Lettice spoke to Mr Maruyama about the UCC-Hiroshima project which involves the germination of seed from 'Survivor Trees' at UCC. Survivor Trees are those which survived the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.
In a collaboration with Green Legacy Hiroshima, the seeds are collected in Hiroshima and dispatched to UCC before they are germinated at the School of BEES. In due course, the trees will be planted into the UCC Arboretum collection as well as at a number of locations around the Cork city. The Ambassador viewed one of the trees during his visit to the UCC Arboretum.

The tree germinated in UCC from the seeds of a 200-year-old tree which survived the detonation of a nuclear bomb over Hiroshima in 1945.
