Amgen Scholars Programme
A placement briefing on the held on Tuesday 9th October 2018 at 18:00 was organised by Dr Sin茅ad Kerins, School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, UCC. Biochemistry students Danny Collins and Shane O鈥� Carroll, and Biomedical Science students, Cl铆ona O鈥橲hea and James Harte discussed their experience of completing this programme and provided information on their research projects. Danny, Cl铆ona and James conducted their research at laboratories in Cambridge and Shane conducted his research project at Institut Pasteur. As a group they provided information on the and social aspects of the programme. Danny, Cl铆ona, James and Shane all found the experience hugely beneficial and extremely enjoyable. In addition to enhancing their research skills, it has provided them with contacts for potential PhD supervisors and they made 鈥渇riends for life鈥� with other Amgen Scholars!

Eurofins placement
Ciar谩n Murphy also discussed his placement at Eurofins, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, Ireland. Ciar谩n had attended the Eurofins Open Day in September 2017 and followed up with some of the personnel he had met at the Open Day. He was called for an interview and secured a laboratory assistant placement in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry lab. During the four months placement, Ciar谩n attained significant experience in Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE, 2D gels), Chromatography (SEC, CEX, RP-HPLC, UPLC), Mass Spectrometry (Ion trap, LC/MS), ELISA (Protein A, sandwich ELISA, competitive ELISA) and qPCR.
Ciar谩n also discussed the 鈥淥ut of Office Activities鈥�, including completion of the Eurofins BPT Greenway Half-Marathon!
