UCC鈥檚 School of Computer Science & IT's work on Trustworthy AI acknowledged in Ireland鈥檚 new National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment has published AI: Here for Good, A National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for Ireland.

Launched yesterday by Taoiseach, Miche谩l Martin TD, and Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy TD, the National AI Strategy will serve as a roadmap for how Ireland can leverage the potential of AI for unlocking productivity, for addressing societal challenges, and for delivering public services. It envisions a future for Ireland as an international leader in using AI to the benefit of business, public services, and 鈥 most importantly 鈥 for people, through a people-centered, ethical approach to AI development, adoption and use.

Many lines of work at CS&IT featured in the strategy including the following that were explicitly mentioned.
 
- The Elements of AI, a MOOC aimed at educating the general public in the basics of AI, is hosted in Ireland through CS&IT. Dr. Derek Bridge and Professor Barry O鈥橲ullivan are the lead tutors.

- The Assessment List for Trustworthy AI is hosted at Insight@UCC on behalf of the European Commission which was an outcome of the Commission鈥檚 High-Level Expert Group on AI. Professor O鈥橲ullivan was Vice Chair of the HLEG-AI, supporting Pekka Ala-Pietila, former President of Nokia, as chair.

- The CRT-AI is called out in the strategy also. The CRT is led from CSIT in UCC by Professor Barry O鈥橲ullivan (Director), Dr. Derek Bridge (co-Director) and Janet Choi (Programme Manager).

In the section of the strategy entitled 鈥淎 Coordinated Approach to AI Adoption by the Public Service鈥 the following is stated in relation to UCC:

"The (GovTech Delivery Board) Board will develop, agree and publish principles for the responsible and ethical use and governance of AI, which will apply to all AI developed for and used by the Public Service. In collaboration with UCC, which is
hosting an online tool to facilitate operationalisation of The Assessment List for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (ALTAI), developed by the EU AI HLEG, the Board will develop case studies as an example of how to operationalise Ethical AI Guidelines.鈥

 

The National AI Strategy will be complimented by an upcoming Expert Group for Future Skills Needs sport on 鈥淪kills Needs for AI鈥. This report is be developed by an ad-hoc committee brought together in collaboration with the Department for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment. Professor Barry O鈥橲ullivan chairs this committee.
