Fires, Land and Atmospheric Remote Sensing of EmissionS (FLARES), funded by EPA, is undertaken by a consortium consisting of four partners based in two European countries. Led by 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork the consortium consists of experts in the fields of Earth Observation systems, atmospheric chemistry, data analysis, communication, and outreach of research outcomes.
The Department of Geography at UCC aims to create pure and applied research of international quality, which impacts on public issues and ongoing debates within and beyond the discipline.
Personnel involved in FLARES:
Project co-ordinator, Dr Fiona Cawkwell (f.cawkwell@ucc.ie) is responsible for liaising with the EPA and the project partners. Fiona holds a degree in Geography and a MSc and PhD in Remote Sensing and has been actively researching for nearly 20 years. Since joining UCC in 2006, Fiona has been building capacity in RS research and education, through teaching, research, and supervising research projects. Emma Chalencon (emma.chalencon@ucc.ie) joined the department as a research assistant for the project. She holds a degree in Geography and a Msc in Environmental Geosystems. She has experience in remote sensing and geospatial data analysis having worked on ESA funded projects before.
Part of the School of Chemistry at UCC, the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC) facility was set up in late 1999. The research activity of CRAC is wide-ranging and encompasses laboratory, field and modelling studies.
Personnel involved in FLARES:
Dean Venables (d.venables@ucc.ie) is a lecturer in Physical and Environmental Chemistry and a director of the CRAC. His research interests focus on atmospheric observations and spectroscopic techniques for detecting trace gases and characterising aerosol optical properties. Dr. Stig Hellebust (s.hellebust@ucc.ie) is a lecturer in Physical Chemistry at UCC with over 15 years of experience of research in atmospheric chemistry and air pollution. He has expertise in statistics, chemical analysis, data analysis, source apportionment modelling, field campaign planning, design and implementation. Clara Felberbauer (cfelberbauer@ucc.ie) holds a degree in Environmental Sciences and was recruited by the School of Chemistry as a Msc student. She is in charge of in-situ measurements and derivation of emission factors and will produce a MSc thesis on the subject.
Randbee Consultants is a consultancy company with expert knowledge on data and statistical analysis, web visualization tools, modelling, e-learning and capacity development for sustainable development.
Personnel involved in FLARES:
Dr. Ned Dwyer (ned.dwyer@randbee.com) has a MSc and PhD in remote sensing. His PhD, carried out at the EC Joint Research Centre, focussed on the global spatio-temporal characterisation of vegetation fires based on the analysis of satellite data. Since January 2019 he is a consultant with Randbee. Juan Ar茅valo Torres (juan.arevalo@randbee.com) is one of the co-founders of Randbee Consultants. He has a BSc in Environmental Sciences and a MSc in Engineering Applied to Development Projects. He has extensive experience in applying Earth Observation including Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service products and GIS technologies to natural resources management. Dr. Beatriz Mart铆n (beatriz.martin@randbee.com) 鈥� has a MSc in Big Data and Data Science and a PhD in Biology. With over 15 years of research experience, she has a relevant publishing record, and she has participated in 11 different research projects. Thedmer Postma (thedmer@randbee.com)
EOAnalytics is a private limited company with a motive of making Earth Observation (EO) data and products more accessible for education and business.
Personnel involved in FLARES:
Guy Serbin (guy@eoanalytics.ie) holds a PhD in Soil Science (Soil Physics) from Utah State 深夜亚洲福利久久 at Logan, UT, USA. He has gained postdoctoral work in the remote sensing of crop residues/ senescent vegetation. Since November 2018 he has been the CEO of EOAnalytics Ltd.
