Health Implementation Research Hub (HIRH) Research Featured at National Implementation Science Conference

9 Jun 2026

A Researcher from HIRH presented work from the CUSTOMISE research project at the Centre for Implementation Research (CIRcUL) conference, "Making it Work: The Practice and Power of Implementation Science", held at the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of Limerick from 4-5 June 2026.

On Thursday, Dr Ana Contreras Navarro presented a poster entitled Tailoring Implementation strategies to support national roll-out of Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) in the Republic of Ireland. The poster showcased findings from a component of the CUSTOMISE research programme that supported the development of implementation strategies for the DAFNE structured diabetes education programme during a period of rapid national expansion across Irish hospitals.

The research explored how implementation strategies were selected and tailored to address barriers and facilitators identified by healthcare professionals involved in DAFNE delivery. Conference attendees engaged in discussions about the tailoring process, with particular interest in how evidence was presented to healthcare professionals to support strategy selection from the Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) compilation and the methods used to facilitate this decision-making process.

On Friday, Dr Contreras Navarro delivered an oral presentation entitled Characterising Processes of Tailoring Implementation Strategies in Healthcare. The presentation reported findings from a scoping review examining how tailoring has been operationalised across healthcare implementation studies. The review explored the methods, participants, theories, and evidence used to identify determinants, prioritise barriers and facilitators, and select implementation strategies.

The conference brought together researchers, practitioners, healthcare professionals, and policymakers interested in advancing the science and practice of implementation. The programme featured keynote presentations from leading international implementation scientists, including Professor Geoffrey Curran and Professor Carl May.

Opening the conference, Professor Geoffrey Curran reflected on the foundations of implementation science and challenged attendees to consider what is meant by "evidence" within implementation research and practice. Drawing on his background in sociology, he highlighted the importance of understanding how evidence is interpreted and used within complex healthcare systems.

On the second day, Professor Carl May explored emerging applications of artificial intelligence in implementation science. His keynote encouraged attendees to think critically about AI as a knowledge-generating technology operating within dynamic and evolving environments, while considering both the opportunities and challenges it presents for implementation research and practice.

The conference provided valuable opportunities to share findings from the CUSTOMISE research programme, engage with the wider implementation science community, and contribute to ongoing discussions about tailoring implementation strategies and supporting the uptake of evidence-based healthcare interventions.
