Pictured above, Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team (not all members present)
The School of Medicine is working to submit our first Bronze Athena Swan Application in November 2023. Per the usual process, a Self-Assessment Team (SAT) has been established and has been working since the latter half of 2022 to prepare.
The SAT Chair, Professor Mark McEntee, and Deputy Chair, Professor Aideen Sullivan, have taken on the responsibility of leading this effort with the support of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Unit who provide subject matter expertise and data analysis. UCC Academy is providing Project Management and Creative Services support to enable an effective application process.
Our thanks to all staff members and students who have agreed to represent their departments and programmes on the SAT, to ensure a diverse and widespread representation of our School. Our thanks also to our colleagues in UCC and other universities in Ireland and the UK who have lent their time to sharing their experiences with our SAT in the pursuit of a successful application.
The Strategic Importance of Athena Swan
The Athena Swan Ireland charter supports us in developing sustainable equity, diversity and inclusion. UCC has held a bronze award since 2016 and is committed to supporting and participating in Athena Swan. As well as our institutional application, many departments are actively engaged in the initiative, with our colleagues in the School of Clinical Therapies being awarded their first Bronze Award in April 2023 (as well as Computer Science and IT, and Mathematical Sciences). This is a key pillar of Ireland鈥檚 national strategy for gender equality with progress linked to institutional eligibility for funding from Ireland鈥檚 major research agencies.
