Prep for Med -UCC Transitions Students into Medicine
Transition Year secondary school students from across Ireland attended 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork鈥檚 School of Medicine on Feb 1st 2019 to attend 鈥楶rep-for Med.鈥 This hugely popular programme allows young people to experience both the life and the facilities available to medical students鈥 in UCC鈥檚 School of Medicine.
Accompanied by their Career Guidance counsellors, the transition year students will be guided through Brookfield Health Sciences Complex and the FLAME Anatomy laboratory, before being put through their paces in multiple teaching stations covering areas such as resuscitation, laboratory testing and anaphylaxis. This allows them to learn first-hand how skills are taught and delivered. The afternoon programme sees the group move to Cork 深夜亚洲福利久久 Hospital where they will be hosted by Professor Mark Corrigan, Clinical Professor in Surgery. Dr. Jason Van der Velde, Emergency Medicine doctor with the Cork 深夜亚洲福利久久 Hospital and the West Cork Rapid Response Unit, will give a presentation on Emergency Medicine followed by Dr. Margot Bolster, Deputy State Pathologist who will discuss the forensic examination of a crime scene, and most unforgettably for past participants, Professor John Higgins, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology will perform a live Caesarean Section, which is broadcast from the operating theatre at CUMH. Professor Corrigan will give a presentation on the 鈥淏ecoming a Doctor鈥 and wrap up what will be a very eventful and entertaining day for the TY students.
Professor Paula O鈥橪eary, Dean of UCC鈥檚 School of Medicine comments that 鈥淯CC has a long and proud tradition in Medical Education. The quality of students who enter our medical programme is first class due in no small way to the excellent secondary schools who prepare those students. 鈥楶rep-for Med鈥 allows students from across Ireland to understand how we train our future Doctors and Clinicians and how they can aspire to a career in Medicine. UCC has led the way in developing this innovative program which showcases life in Medicine to secondary school students, and I am looking forward to seeing some of our visitors return to UCC鈥檚 School of Medicine in the years ahead.鈥
Dr Brad Noel, lead of undergraduate recruitment at UCC鈥檚 School of Medicine, comments 鈥淭his initiative opens Cork's doors to Schools from across the country as we seek to attract from our nation鈥檚 sparkling youth the finest of Irish potential so we may prepare the next crop of Tomorrow鈥檚 Doctors.''
