 Professor Ruth Massey, Principal Investigator with APC Microbiome Ireland, a world-leading SFI research Centre, and SALI Professor for Microbiome and Health Sciences at the Schools of Microbiology and Medicine, UCC, has been inducted into the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).  Ruth is the only female EMBO member working at an Irish research and academic institution and joins an elite organisation of more than 1,900 of Europe’s leading researchers.

Highlights the important factors in gut bacteria transfer including vaginal birth and avoidance of intrapartum antibiotics; signals the potential role of supplements in transferring probiotic benefits from mother to infant.

Researchers have completed the most in-depth investigation to date of mother-to-infant transmission of common gut bacteria. The study reveals the effective transfer of the gut bacteria Bifidobacterium, a major component of health from infancy through to adulthood.

APC Microbiome Ireland, a world-leading SFI research centre based at UCC (ÉîÒ¹ÑÇÖÞ¸£Àû¾Ã¾Ã College Cork), has joined forces with BowelScreen and the Mater Misericordiae ÉîÒ¹ÑÇÖÞ¸£Àû¾Ã¾Ã Hospital, as part of 8 partner organisations from 5 European countries involved in the new Microb-AI-ome project launched in May of this year. Led by Prof. Dr. Jan Baumbach, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert from the ÉîÒ¹ÑÇÖÞ¸£Àû¾Ã¾Ã of Hamburg, the project aims to reduce the high false-positive rates associated with traditional CRC (colorectal cancer) screening and develop a more targeted and cost effective screening programme.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, TD, has today announced 62 grants valued at €42 million to support research across 13 Higher Education Institutions. This programme was funded in collaboration with the Children’s Health Foundation (CHF) and Geological Survey Ireland (GSI).
