In its annual ranking of international scientists Research.com has scored seven APC and UCC scientists in the top ten list of Irish microbiologists.  APC Director Paul Ross who was ranked first in Ireland and 25th globally, was also the recipient of Research.com’s Microbiology Leader Award for 2023.

• Scientists have produced an atomic-level structure of a novel virus that attacks and kills bacteria in the human gut.
• This major breakthrough will facilitate research to investigate their role on human health.
• These highly abundant viruses can account for up to 95% of gut viruses in some individuals.

• Women researchers won all accolades at the 2023 GatewayUCC’s SPRINT Awards.
• The awards celebrate the commercialisation of research to address key health, social and environmental issues.
• GatewayUCC supports researcher-led start-up and spin-out companies.

• APC Microbiome Ireland (APC) researchers together with Spanish and United Kingdom institutions will explore links between nutrition, immunity and infectious disease.
• Research aims to support the development of new strategies to address the global burden of disease.
• Improved understanding of nutrition will enable society to be better prepared for future pandemics.

The awards recognise Cork based organisations and services who have created welcoming spaces for Travellers and supported Traveller rights and culture.

Researchers discover that youth binge drinking is linked to gut microbiome changes

• Study finds that young adult binge drinks show alterations in the gut microbiome.
• The alternations are linked with poor ability to recognise emotions and cravings to consume alcohol.
• Youth binge drinking can have short and long-term impacts on health and wellbeing.
