Dr Vahid Aryanpur
Overview
Vahid Aryanpur is a Research Fellow with the Energy Policy and Modelling Group, in UCC. His research interests focus on development and application of integrated techno-economic energy systems models. He explores interactions with climate, economy, and society to identify resilient pathways toward achieving future sustainable development goals.
Current Work
Vahid is currently involved in the CAPACITY project, which aims to develop energy system models to support exploration, decision-making, and governance of long-term pathways consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement in Ireland. His primary focus lies in developing the TIMES-Ireland Model to examine the consequences of accelerated versus delayed action regarding national-scale carbon budgets.
Background
In his previous postdoctoral position, Vahid conducted research on the decarbonisation of road freight transport and the role of zero emission trucks. Vahid completed his Ph.D. on improving the ability of energy systems optimisation modelling to inform national energy policymaking. His main focus was on spatial resolution, energy-economy linkage, significance of model skill, and heterogeneity of consumers. Prior to his Ph.D., he gained 10 years of experience working with various energy system optimisation and simulation models, developing scenarios for the energy supply and demand sectors.

Dr Julia Blanke
Overview Julia鈥檚 research interests are the modelling of human behaviour using theories from psychology and the social sciences and their translation into operational technological solutions. Behavioural modelling is not limited to a single area of interest but can be adapted to a broad spectrum of domains ranging, for example, from applications in the energy sector to health interventions, all the time focusing on relevant behaviours of participants.
The focus of her current research is in the area of energy behaviour to understand how human actors and their decisions and actions can be better utilised in the planning and operation of energy systems and beyond. Her work can be broken down into two major pillars, with one being citizen engagement and co-design research focusing on energy communities and the development and evaluation of tools for planning and implementation of local energy solutions. The second pillar of her research is the integration and operationalisation of behavioural models, making them more accessible to technological systems with a strong focus on residential demand response. The outcome of her research always aims at facilitating the integration and operationalisation into technological solutions such as, for example, behaviour digital twins or front-end applications.
Current work: Julia is currently participating in the energy related Horizon project ENPOWER, working closely with end-users and citizens to foster broad and active involvement in the energy transition by applying a participatory and co-design methodology for stakeholder engagement.
Background: Julia has been contributing to European Horizon research projects in the energy sector for many years. She holds a PhD in Psychology from the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of Luxembourg, researching the relationship between healthy and sustainable food shopping behaviour. She also holds a master鈥檚 degree (MA) in Social Behaviour Science and Educational Science from the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of Hagen (Germany) with a strong emphasis on work and organisational psychology.
Dr Teresa Bonserio
OVERVIEW
My research focuses on developing and applying integrated modelling tools to support the design and assessment of energy transition strategies, with the aim of delivering policy-relevant and context-specific insights.
During my PhD, I have concentrated on the African energy sector. I first expanded the scope of OSeMOSYS-TEMBA AHA, an energy system model for continental Africa, to enable assessments of the socio-political and ecological implications of future energy transitions on the continent. I then developed a soft link between GCAM, a global Integrated Assessment Model, and OSeMOSYS-TEMBA AHA to improve the accuracy and policy relevance of power-system transition analyses generated by each model.
CURRENT WORK
I am currently a Research Assistant in MaREI鈥檚 Energy Policy and Modelling Group (EPMG) at the Sustainability Institute. My work focuses on increasing the granularity of Low Energy Demand (LED) scenarios within the TIMES-Ireland Model (TIM).
BACKGROUND
I am concluding my PhD within the STEP-Change programme (Science, Technology and Policy for Sustainable Change) at Politecnico di Milano. I hold an MSc in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and a BSc in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Politecnico di Bari.
During my PhD, I have worked as a Scientific Affiliate with the CMCC Foundation (Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici) under the TCT (Technologies for Climate Transition) division. I also completed a six-month visiting research stay at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the United States.
I have additional experience in the consultancy sector from my previous role as a Sustainability Analyst at Deloitte, as well as teaching experience as a teaching assistant for two consecutive years at Politecnico di Milano.

Prof Hannah Daly
Overview
I am a Professor in Sustainable Energy at 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork. I lead a team of researchers who analyse future pathways for the energy system compatible with steep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions necessary to address climate change. I communicate extensively on the topic of climate action in Ireland, writing a monthly column,
At A Time Of Climate Crisis, for the Irish Times, and I engage with and advise government, civil society and industry on decarbonisation.

Dr Paul Deane
Overview
I think about the future and how we will heat our homes, fuel our cars, use our land and generate electricity. I have been involved in the energy industry for approximately 15 years in both commercial and academic research and I try to understand the transition to low carbon energy systems from a technical, societal and an economic perspective. I use computer modelling tools like PLEXOS and TIMES to simulate what different futures might look like and I am very interested in Energy and Climate Policy.
Current Work
Paul is a CO-PI on the CAPACITY Project which is developing energy system models to support climate action policy making in Ireland, for the Department of environment, Climate and Communications. Paul is a Senior Lecturer in Clean Energy Futures at UCC, and supervises PhD Candidates and Maters Students.

Zahra Hajighasemi
Overview
Zahra is a Research Assistant at the Energy Policy and Modeling Group, UCC. She is working on improving the visualization of the models鈥 results and the group鈥檚 website. Her focus will be on programming, data visualization, and web development.
Background
Zahra completed her Research Master of Engineering Science on 鈥data-driven hydrogeological mapping and its impact on tunnel infrastructure鈥 at UCC. She first gathered and structured geological data near the CERN tunnels and then applied a variety of Machine Learning algorithms to build a geological map. Finally, she investigated the relationships between the developed hydrogeological map and leakage data for a specific section of the tunnel. Zahra also holds a Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Physics with a minor in Computer Engineering from the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of Tehran.

Dr Tomas Mac Uidhir
OVERVIEW
Tom谩s is a postdoctoral researcher in MaREI and is located in the Environmental Research Institute in UCC. Tom谩s is an expert developer of the Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP) energy system model for Ireland. He is interested in developing simulation models that provide insights into policy implementation pathways.

Currently, Tom谩s is supporting the development of the LEAP Ireland energy system model as part of the project.

Tom谩s holds a BSc (Mathematics and Theoretical Physics) from Maynooth 深夜亚洲福利久久 and a MEngSc (Sustainable Energy) from UCC. His PhD from UCC (Energy Engineering) focused on advanced simulation modelling techniques to understand past and inform future climate action in Ireland.

Dr Róisín Moriarty
OVERVIEW
Dr R贸is铆n Moriarty works on climate and policy and is based in 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork (UCC). While her research has focused on climate change and the carbon cycle, it is the synthesis and communication of scientific data for policy and other decision makers that has shaped her career.
Her current focus is the development of new integrated energy-land-food systems modelling tools that support long-term climate planning and improve the evidence base for climate policy.
Her research is focused on carbon budgets, carbon removal and modelling the synergies and trade-offs in the energy-land-food system. She is interested in transformative mitigation and adaptation that move us from imagining a climate-neutral, resilient and equitable futures to realising that transformation and its multiple benefits.
She has co-authored numerous academic papers, including a paper in Nature, a book chapter on carbon budgets and was a lead author on Climate Change Advisory Council Periodic and Annual Review Reports.
She worked as expert reviewer on greenhouse gas inventories technical reports for the UNFCCC (2018 to 2023).
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Her current focus is the development of new integrated energy-land-food systems modelling tools that support long-term climate planning and improve the evidence base for climate policy.
The specific objectives of this work are as follows:
1) to quantify the potential fair level of CO2 emissions Ireland may be required to sequester in the period to 2100 under different global temperature goals, near-term mitigation efforts and non-CO2 emissions trajectories;
2) to review the potential mitigation and carbon sequestration levers specific to Ireland, including both technology and behaviour change, quantifying their total sequestration potential, energy requirement and land use requirement;
3) map the interactions, in particular the potential complementarities and conflicts, between deep decarbonisation and sequestration levers in each of the energy, land and food systems;
4) review global, regional and national modelling approaches to assessing integrated pathways for sustainable land-food-energy systems, including reviewing which interactions are captured in existing Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs)
5) develop a new modelling methodology, SELFS, to downscale global IAMs to a national scale and simulate long- time horizon integrated Sustainable Energy-Land-Food Systems scenarios under a range of demand and technology futures
6) model a range of divergent possible futures for Ireland using SELFS, integrating existing national modelling energy, agriculture and land use modelling frameworks, to inform long-term policy planning for climate mitigation

OVERVIEW
Aisling is a Research Support Officer on the project, and is also supporting the wider Energy Policy and Modelling Group. She completed a Master鈥檚 by Research Degree at UCC, in which her thesis focused on Metocean Engineering. She also completed a BA in Geographical and Archaeological Sciences at UCC, in which her thesis focused on sustainable energy and climatology. Previously Aisling worked as a consultant for offshore wind.

Aisling is a Research Support Officer on the project, which is developing energy system models to support climate action policy making in Ireland, assisting with project management tasks.

Aisling perviously worked as a consultant for offshore wind in which she specialized in metocean engineering and project management, working to develop offshore wind projects in Ireland and globally. She completed a Master鈥檚 by Research Degree at UCC, in which her thesis focused on analyzing the variations in sea surface temperature changes around Ireland鈥檚 coastline from 2002-2020. She also completed a BA in Geographical and Archaeological Sciences at UCC, in which her thesis focused on sustainable energy and climatology.

Overview
I am interested in researching the impact of geopolitics and international relations on multinational enterprises, states, and society. My work identifies strategic imperatives that offer practical insights for navigating complex and uncertain global political environments. I hold a PhD in International Business Strategy from Cork 深夜亚洲福利久久 Business School and have published in leading management and strategy journals.
Current Work
I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Energy Policy and Modelling at the Environmental Research Institute (ERI). My research focuses on analyzing the risks and uncertainties associated with critical energy supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions and their impact on energy security. I also assess potential solutions to enhance Ireland鈥檚 energy resilience during its energy system transition.

I have experience teaching strategy and international business modules, as well as researching strategy and cross-border risks. As the Kraft Heinz PhD Fellow in International Business Strategy during my PhD, I investigated non-market strategy and implications of geopolitical risk to states and enterprises.

Prof Brian Ó Gallachóir
Overview
Brian 脫 Gallach贸ir is Professor of Energy Engineering at UCC and Director of MaREI, the 鈧65 million SFI Research Centre for Energy Climate and Marine.
He established integrated energy systems modelling research capacity in Ireland and is an internationally recognised expert with over 30 years research experience. He is ranked first place globally in google scholar in the category of energy modelling, having built and advanced energy models to undertake climate mitigation analysis.
Current Work
Brian is the elected Chair of International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme on energy systems modelling (IEA-ETSAP) and an elected Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering. His research has delivered significant societal impact, in informing major Irish energy and climate policy decisions in the past 10 years, but also EU energy and climate mitigation policies and energy company strategies. Brian has also increased the transdisciplinary nature of climate action research, particularly evident in the multi-award winning Dingle Peninsula 2030 partnership project. He was awarded the SFI Best International Engagement Award 2020 and SFI Best Engaged Research Award in 2022. Brian is also a CO-PI on the CAPACITY project which is developing energy system models to support climate action policy making in Ireland for the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications.
Brian as also instrumental in establishing a new engineering discipline in Ireland, namely energy engineering, by developing Ireland鈥檚 first taught Masters programme in sustainable energy in 2005 at UCC, and the first undergraduate BE degree programme in energy engineering in 2008.

Dr. Alexandra Revez
OVERVIEW
Alexandra is a Research Fellow in MaREI and is located in the Environmental Research Institute in UCC. She also works with the Cleaner Production Promotion Unit in UCC. Alexandra is a human geographer with over 10 years of experience working on multidisciplinary research projects in the areas of sustainable transitions, engaged climate action interventions, community development and flood risk management.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Alexandra is a Human Geographer and a Research Fellow in MaREI, in 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork. Her research work has concentrated in diverse areas including the societal and policy aspects of climate action, disaster management and energy transitions. Some of the projects she is currently involved include- STEPS (2020-2024) exploring public engagement with energy transition through an analysis of EirGrid鈥檚 evolving public engagement processes, case-studies on the community benefit scheme and the Celtic interconnector (led by ); Creative C-Change (2021-2023) analysing the impact of the arts in climate action in Ireland (led by ),; ENCLUDE (2021-2024) exploring different manifestations of energy citizenship for inclusive decarbonisation across Europe with ( led by ).
Alexandra is the Vice-Chair of the COST Action SHiFT Social Sciences and Humanities for Transformation and Climate Resilience. SHiFT seeks to strengthen SSH and transdisciplinary contributions within climate action research. Alexandra is also a member of the International Energy Agency Users-TCP Programme on Gender & Energy Task Force (IEA-Users-TCP) and is an elected external expert advisor in Ireland with the Teaching Council since 2017.
BACKGROUND
Alexandra brings a broad range of experiences and expertise in transdisciplinary collaborations in research, at national and international levels, accrued over 10 years. Her work builds on a robust set of experiences, commitment and skills, that includes promoting SSH research in cutting edge areas of teaching and research and linking this knowledge and level of interaction across a range of arenas and areas of expertise. Her ongoing work with the JPI Climate Action Group 鈥Enabling Societal Transformations in the Face of Climate Change鈥 aims to mobilise key social science and humanities research perspectives to promote just transitions in the face of climate change. Alexandra also has accrued experience teaching at third level, including development and delivery of Postgraduate modules in the Geography Department in NUIG and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation projects (2010-2015). Co-development and delivery of a three year blended Doctoral School Programme through the 鈥ANDROID Disaster Resilience Network鈥 (2012-2015) and various guest lectures for the MA in Sociology of Sustainability and Global Challenges in the Module 鈥SC6631 Sociology of Sustainable Development鈥 led by Dr Gerard Mullally in UCC (2020-2021).

Dr Fionn Rogan
Overview
Fionn is a Senior Research Fellow in MaREI and is located in the Environmental Research Institute in UCC. Fionn is interested in energy systems modelling, climate policy pathways, philosophy of technology, and energy innovation. Fionn is an expert developer of the LEAP Ireland energy system model and an experienced user of the Irish TIMES energy system model.
Current Activities
Fionn currently leads the CAPACITY project which is developing energy system models to support climate action policy making in Ireland.
Background
Fionn has also worked on projects examining the decarbonisation opportunities for Ireland. He is formerly a climate technology fellow supported by the EPA, where he examined how an innovation systems approach can help realise climate technology opportunities in Ireland. For his PhD, Fionn developed and used techno-economic energy systems models for long-term energy systems evaluation.
He has lectured on many energy systems modelling and sustainable energy modules in UCC and has published in key energy and transport research journals. In addition to academic work, Fionn has extensive industry experience, where he worked in the semi-conductor industry for four years. Fionn has a B.Eng. (Industrial Engineering and Information Systems) from NUI Galway, an MEngSc (Sustainable Energy) from UCC, and a PhD (Energy efficiency evaluation and energy systems modelling) from UCC.

Dr Fatemeh Rostami
Overview
Fatemeh Rostami is a researcher in sustainable energy systems, focusing on the materials-energy-climate nexus. Her work explores the environmental and policy implications of clean energy transitions, particularly regarding critical raw materials, and emphasizes fairness and justice in access to resources and technologies while ensuring long-term climate and energy security.
Current Work
Fatemeh is a postdoctoral researcher in the Energy Policy and Modelling Group at the Sustainability Institute, 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork. Within the SHIELD project, she investigates the implications of supply constraints and technology choices for Europe鈥檚 energy transition and climate targets.
Background
Fatemeh holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain), where she was awarded the Mart铆 i Franqu猫s scholarship. She has collaborated with Imperial College London on projects linking energy systems analysis with climate policy and has received recognition for her research, including the URV PhD Extraordinary Award.

Bakytzhan completed a Master of Science in Nuclear Physics in Dubna International 深夜亚洲福利久久 for Nature, Society and Man, Dubna, Russia, and a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Physics at Gumilev Eurasian National 深夜亚洲福利久久, Astana, Kazakhstan. He has worked in varios modelling roles such as an Energy Economist in Laboratory for Energy Systems Analysis, Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland in which he Created/developed techno-economic models of the energy system of New Zealand, and Switzerland with all EU/EEA countries using linear optimisation (in GAMS, CPLEX, TIMES/MARKAL) for studying energy and climate policies, energy pathways.

I am Neha Jaggeshar from Mauritius. I am enrolled as a PhD candidate at Energy Policy and Modelling Group, under the supervision of Prof. Hannah Daly. I will be pursuing my research in developing new integrated energy-land-food systems modelling tools and capacity to support long-term climate planning.

Dr Duncan Matthews
OVERVIEW
Duncan is an Irish Research Council employment-based scholar working with ElectroRoute, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, to model the roles hydrogen and its derivatives can play in the decarbonisation of energy systems. His work uses simulation software to model the deployment of hydrogen as an energy vector in Paris-Agreement-aligned energy system pathways.

Duncan holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and an ME in Energy Systems Engineering, both from 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Dublin. As a part of his ME, Duncan undertook an internship with ElectroRoute, who he continued to work with as an Energy Analyst upon completion of his placement.

Yazan Oudeh
Background
Yazan holds a Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy from 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork (2025), completed under the fully-funded Ireland-Palestine Scholarship Programme, and a Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his master鈥檚, Yazan interned as an Energy Analyst with the Energy Statistics team at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), gaining hands-on experience in energy policy and analysis.
Before joining EPMG, Yazan accumulated three years of professional experience in the energy and engineering sectors, including his role as a Project Development Engineer in the energy and infrastructure field. In this position, he oversaw renewable energy projects and energy efficiency initiatives across industrial and commercial facilities. His work involved photovoltaic system optimisation, project feasibility assessments, and coordination with international finance and development institutions.
His master鈥檚 thesis, 鈥淒eveloping Resilient Energy Solutions for Ireland鈥檚 Clean Energy Transition,鈥 explored the intersection of energy security and sustainability, analysing how Ireland鈥檚 move toward renewables may shift vulnerabilities from fuel dependency to critical material reliance, and proposing strategies to strengthen supply resilience through diversification and circular economy approaches. He also has a journal publication from his undergraduate studies, reflecting his early engagement in research.
Jeanne Spillane
OVERVIEW
Jeanne is a Doctoral Student at MaREI, currently pursuing a PhD at 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork under the supervision of , , and Dr. Steve Pye. Her PhD project is exploring the topic of 鈥淎chieving universal access to clean fuels and technologies within households: synergies and trade-offs with climate action goals
BACKGROUND
Jeanne has extensive experience working in energy efficiency, policy and development. Prior to starting her PhD, Jeanne worked as a policy officer with the Heat and Energy Efficiency Scotland team in the Scottish Government where she led on Home Energy Scotland, the Scottish Government鈥檚 flagship domestic energy advice service, and on the relationship with Energy Saving Trust, key delivery partners for the Scottish Government Heat in Buildings Strategy.
She completed the first 12-week Community Energy Mentor course run by the Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub and was involved in the Corca Dhuibhne Community Energy Group.
Previously, Jeanne worked as Regional Communications Consultant with WFP in Asia (2015-2017), where her role involved providing communications support to country offices across Asia, including travel to Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Afghanistan for emergency comms support. Jeanne previously worked as part of a small team supporting the Irish Ambassador to the United Nations in his position as co-chair of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) negotiations in New York. She worked with DFAT Ireland on a Review of Irish Foreign Policy; she worked in Rwanda where she conducted research on peacebuilding and radio programming for her Master鈥檚 thesis. She has an M.Sc. in Development Practice 鈥 an interdisciplinary program exploring issues in development across Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Economics and Management and Health. She also has an M.Phil. in International Peace Studies.

Weipeng Xie
Overview
I am Weipeng Xie from China. I am doing as a PhD student at Energy Policy and Modelling Group, under the supervision of Prof. Hannah Daly and Paul Deane. My research focus on modelling negative emissions technologies (NETs) for long-term net-zero or negative emissions pathways.
