Dr H. H. Stewart Literary award for UCC student

Congratulations to Caitr铆ona Nic Bloscaidh who won an award recently in the NUI Dr H. H. Stewart Literary competition based on her first year results.

  • Maeve Clancy, Fulbright Scholarship, 深夜亚洲福利久久 of St. Thomas, Minnesota, USA.

Two important donations by Aingeal U铆 Bhuachalla

The Department of Modern Irish is delighted to report that two important donations have recently been received from Aingeal U铆 Bhuachalla in memory of her late husband, Professor Breand谩n 脫 Buachalla.

  1. The archive of Cape Clear material, which Professor 脫 Buachalla assembled over many years, has been donated - through the agency of the Department of Modern Irish - to the Boole Library. This archive comprises comprehensive written and sound records of the Irish of Cl茅ire, together with phonetic transcripts, publications, and other documents. It will prove a vital and invaluable resource for students and researchers.

  2. Aingeal U铆 Buachalla has also made a donation to the Department of Modern Irish of complete runs of a number of important scholarly periodicals such as Eighteenth-century IrelandIrish Economic and Social HistoryStudia Hibernica, etc. These periodicals are now on the shelves in the postgraduates' room in the Department.

The Department is indebted to Aingeal for her great generosity.

PhD Studentship 2013-14 available

The Department of Modern Irish is offering a PhD Studentship for the year 2013-14.

New Certificate in Arts (Modern-Irish)

A Certificate in Arts (Modern Irish) (NFQ Level 6) will be offered by UCC at Col谩iste na Rinne, Co. Waterford  in 2013-14.

The course will consist of one module of Irish language and grammar, and three modules on the Irish literature of Co. Waterford.

This course will be taught through Irish, and will be suitable for people who already have a spoken and written ability in the language.

The cost will be 鈧700 (鈧350 per term)

The teachers are: Gr谩inne N铆 L煤baigh MA, 脕ine U铆 Fhoghl煤 MA, Dr M铆che谩l 脫 Drisle谩in, Prof. P谩draig 脫 Mach谩in.

An information evening will be held at Col谩iste na Rinne on Thursday, 27 June, from 7.30 p.m. All are welcome.

Congratulations to Fulbright Scholar

Congratulations to one of our graduates, Naoise de Bhaldraithe, who has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach Irish at the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of Montana.

Book launch: 'Leanbh Deireanach an Bhlascaoid'

On Thursday, 14 March, 5 p.m., Seomra Caidrimh, O鈥橰ahilly Building

Liam P. 脫 Murch煤 will launch a book by one of his own former students, Fiona Crowe. The book is entitled Leanbh Deireanach an Bhlascaoid [鈥楾he last child of the Blasket鈥橾, and the subject of the book, Gear贸id Cheaist 脫 Cath谩in, will be in attendance. The book is published by Coisc茅im.

All are welcome.

New book to be published by graduate of Modern Irish

A book by Fiona Crowe, based on her MA (2012) dissertation at the Department of Modern Irish, is to be published by Coisc茅im later this year.

Entitled Leanbh Deireanach an Bhlascaoid, it is based on interviews Fiona conducted with the last child born on the Great Blasket, before the island was evacuated in 1953. Gear贸id Cheaist 脫 Cath谩in's memories of his childhood on the island will add significantly to the store of Blasket literature and ethnology preserved in other collections and publications, in which the Department has had a strong and unique research-interest over the years.
