Physiology week 2023

In the thrill of Science Week, our Department of Physiology geared up for a cyclathon aiming to pedal 100 kilometres for charity. However, fuelled by our passion for two noble causes鈥擫aura Lynn Children鈥檚 Hospice and the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association鈥攚e exceeded expectations, cycling an exhilarating 160 kilometres on the day! Alongside this feat, to celebrate physiology week we hosted an engaging and interactive physiology blitz right in the heart of the western gateway building on the UCC campus. Enthusiastic participation and palpable excitement filled the air as students and faculty alike delved into how the body works, measuring grip strength and visual reaction time and talking about the what it is to be human. The day was a resounding success, brimming with joy and a shared passion for Physiology. It was a celebration of knowledge, fitness, and camaraderie, provoking curiosity and sparking a desire to learn more about our bodies.

Physiology Friday 2016

The Department of Physiology, 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork celebrated Physiology Friday on October 14th, in conjunction with The Physiological Society, as part of an international series of events during Biology Week.

Building on the success of our event in 2015, we once again enjoyed a fun-filled day that included ECG recordings of passing volunteers and an impressive BioBake sale, showcasing an impressive range of tasty physiological treats, raising more than 鈧600 for MaryMount Hospice. The day鈥檚 exciting events began with a public lecture by exercise physiologist Trevor Woods, who incorporated an exercise test demonstration into his informative talk of life as a working physiologist. Trevor鈥檚 talk had lessons for the sport enthusiast and wannabe, beyond insight to his work with professional elite athletes. A blitz of short presentations by academic staff, trainees and undergraduate students included entertaining approaches to the dissemination of physiology that included short film, video, poetry, song, puzzle-solving whilst presenting, and a lively talk by final year Physiology class rep on reproductive physiology, a stimulating review of a summer research placement at Cambridge 深夜亚洲福利久久 (cue Mr. Barry White 鈾). The day ended with a table-quiz allowing most to flaunt their general ignorance. Physiology Friday 2016 was a great success. Professor Ken O鈥橦alloran, head of department, extended gratitude on behalf of the department to all staff, trainees and students who gave generously of their time and all who helped to contribute to the successful day.

The theme of Women in Science was celebrated by drawing attention to female Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine winners. The day鈥檚 exciting events culminated in a public lecture by a visiting scholar from the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of Cambridge. Professor Ken O鈥橦alloran, Head of Department, commented: 鈥淧hysiology is the science of life 鈥 hugely relevant to the contemporary discussion of health and wellbeing.  Physiology Friday was a great success for all involved and all who enjoyed the opportunity to link with the Department and the discipline鈥.
