Launch of 'The Boolean' Journal

We were delighted to celebrate the launch of The Boolean, an interdisciplinary journal dedicated to sharing the research of UCC’s PhD students, with the aim of connecting PhD students across the university.

The journal was originally founded in 2010 and ran until 2015, until its revival in December 2022. 

The publication covers a diverse collection of topics with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary connections. The first issued features thirty five articles, on topics ranging from Cú Chulainn, to cancer, to carbon capture technology, and authors from the departments of anatomy, microbiology, Italian, pediatrics, and many more. 

The interdisciplinary nature of The Boolean is to share cutting-edge research between young scholars and to help foster connections between the next generation of scholars in these diverse areas of study. This echoes the aims of UCC, where diverging and interdisciplinary studies are pushed to the forefront in recent projects such as the new Radical Humanities Laboratory and the launch of UCC Futures. The Boolean nurtures many core university graduate attributes and values, particularly ‘creators, communicators, and evaluators of knowledge’, ‘independent and creative thinkers’, ‘integrity’, ‘respect’ and ‘ambition’.  

These articles have all been written with accessability in mind, not only writing for a broader academic audience, but also to help bridge the gap between scholars and the public, and to foster interest in UCC’s diverse programs. The Boolean invites the world to share our passion for learning, and to consider solutions for looming challenges facing the world such as public health and climate crises, which is more important now then ever.
