Qualcomm Faculty Award for Dr Emanuel Popovici
Dr Emanuel Popovici has received the 2024 Qualcomm Faculty Award. Dr Popovici is a Senior Lecturer in UCC's School of Engineering and Architecture and director of the Embedded Systems research group.
The Qualcomm Faculty Award comes with a generous philanthropic gift to support the work of Dr Popovici鈥檚 Embedded Systems group in Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
Dr Emanuel Popovici has made significant contributions to the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the EDGE, secure and reliable digital circuits and systems, and signal processing. His innovative interdisciplinary approaches to design, analysis, and implementation have led to high-impact solutions, including:
- Low-power AI at the edge for brain monitoring for seizures
- AI-assisted sonification of biomedical signals
- AI-augmented wearable stethoscope
- AR and VR technologies for biomedical applications (healthcare)
- AI and smart beehives
- Environmental and air quality monitoring for cyclists
- Weather-modulated communications and fire detection in forests (IoT)
- Internet of Things (IoT) and network security
- Hardware accelerators for financial applications
The prestigious Qualcomm Faculty Award (QFA) supports key academics and their research through a charitable donation to their university. This funding aims to advance research in strategic areas and strengthen Qualcomm鈥檚 engagement with faculty who play a pivotal role in Qualcomm's recruitment of top graduate students.
