UCC Rocketry Society Launches to Success at Mach-25
UCC鈥檚 Rocketry and Space Exploration Society (RSES) made an impressive debut at Mach-25, a rocketry competition held at Machrihanish Airbase in Scotland.
The team launched 'Prometheus', their first high-powered rocket, reaching an altitude of 2,259 metres and a speed of 313 m/s鈥�90% the speed of sound.
Built entirely by the student engineering team, 'Prometheus' featured a cardboard body reinforced with fibreglass, 3D-printed components, and a CanSat packed with sensors and a GoPro to capture the flight.
As only the second rocket ever built by the society, 'Prometheus' represented a major milestone and a bold undertaking for the fledgling team. Despite early development challenges, the team overcame delays and successfully launched on the final day of the event.
The rocket鈥檚 performance matched expectations, and the CanSat was recovered with stunning aerial footage. RSES placed 5th out of 11 teams, a strong result for their first competition. They also connected with industry figures, including former NASA astronaut Dan Tani, who is set to speak at UCC later this year.
