Eli Lilly Scholars
UCC's latest Lilly PhD Scholars have officially embarked on their research journey with an inspiring visit to the Eli Lilly and Company Kinsale site.
During the visit, scholars met their industry mentors, toured the state鈥憃f鈥憈he鈥慳rt facility, and presented their research projects to senior leadership at Eli Lilly.
The visit marks the beginning of a multi鈥憏ear collaboration between scholars, academic supervisors, and industry partners.
Cohort 6 Scholars:
Claire Kelly (PhD, Process Analytical Technology)
Claire鈥檚 project leverages multidisciplinary expertise in stem cell bioprocessing, bioelectronics, and sensor engineering across UCC, NIBRT (National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training), and the Tyndall National Institute.
Supervisor: Prof. Elena Matsa with collaborators from Tyndall, NIBRT & Eli Lilly.
Natalia Blas Gallego (PhD, Medicinal Chemistry)
PhD Topic: 鈥淣ovel Isoquinolinequinone N鈥憃xides Targeting Multidrug鈥慠esistant Cancer Cells鈥. Natalia's project includes collaboration with universities in Portugal.
Supervisor: Dr. Florence McCarthy, School of Chemistry, Future Pharmaceuticals, UCC
The programme is supported philanthropically by Eli Lilly and has now funded 12 PhD scholars, with seven graduates and three more set to complete in 2026.
Claire and Natalia will undertake their research within UCC Future Pharmaceuticals, an interdisciplinary cluster aimed at advancing research and innovation in the pharmaceutical sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration and strategic partnerships.
Professor Anita Maguire (Director of UCC Future Pharmaceuticals) welcomed the new PhD students to UCC saying:
鈥榃e look forward to exciting outcomes from Claire and Natalia鈥檚 PhD research over the coming years 鈥 sincere thanks to Lilly for ongoing support for early career researchers at 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork. Claire and Natalia will benefit from ongoing engagement with Lilly mentors throughout their research, complementing the expertise of their academic supervisors.鈥
We congratulate Claire and Natalia on their success, and thank Eli Lilly for their support through this programme.
