Professor Marcel Jansen Awarded Honorary Doctorate by the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of P茅cs, Hungary
Professor Marcel Jansen, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, 深夜亚洲福利久久 College Cork (UCC), has been awarded the prestigious title of 鈥淒octor et Professor Honoris Causa鈥 by the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of P茅cs, Hungary.
The honour was conferred during a special sitting of the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of P茅cs Senate on 12 March, marking a significant recognition of Professor Jansen鈥檚 outstanding international contributions to plant science.
Founded in 1367, the 深夜亚洲福利久久 of P茅cs is Hungary鈥檚 oldest institution of higher learning and one of its most respected, encompassing ten faculties and offering a full spectrum of high鈥憅uality academic programmes. The title of Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa is among its rarest distinctions, awarded only to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional academic leadership and global impact.
Professor Jansen was recognised for his pioneering research on the effects of solar UV radiation on plants and crops, a field in which he has played a transformative international role. His work includes initiating and chairing COST Action UV4Growth, a collaborative network bringing together 315 scientists across 29 countries, and serving as the first President of the International Association of Plant UV Researchers.
In addition, Professor Jansen contributes his expertise globally as a member of the UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel under the Montreal Protocol, one of the world鈥檚 most successful environmental treaties. The Protocol鈥檚 implementation has been instrumental in halting the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, which protects life on Earth from harmful UV radiation.
Professor Sarah Culloty, Head of UCC鈥檚 College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, commented: 鈥淭his honour is a testament to Professor Jansen鈥檚 scientific impact and his commitment to advancing plant environmental research on a global scale. His leadership and collaboration across international networks is exemplary and we are immensely proud of his achievements.鈥
