1.2 The building blocks of matter

This section brings you through the range of models which physicists today use to describe the fundamental building blocks of matter on different scales, from quarks to molecules. It is not important, at this stage, to know much more than the bare essentials outlined as all of the topics involved will be revisited in detail in Chapters 24 and 27. If you would like to know some more about elementary particles, however, there are many excellent websites available, such as .

The Fermilab video  is a nice presentation of the principal concepts involved.

page from CERN includes an interesting video on the history of the development of the model and CERN's role in this.
