The first eight sections of this chapter describe some of the significant experiments and analyses that gave rise to the development of quantum mechanics in the early years of the 20^th century. It is then shown how the ideas of wave-particle duality and the uncertainty principle led to the development of formal quantum mechanical theories.  In the rest of the chapter the Schrödinger formulation is explained and subsequently applied to a number of simple but important one-dimensional systems.
