Chapter 26 Semiconductors

This chapter begins by introducing the band theory of solids and its application to conductors, insulators and (particularly for this chapter) semiconductors. Junctions in conductors and semiconductors are explained and the the use of biased p-n junctions in a range of practical applications is described.  Finally the discussion is extended to transistors which are the basic building blocks of the wide range of microelectonic devices available today.  Microprocessors, memory chips, etc. can now be fabricated with huge transistor densities, fast switching and low power consumption which has enabled the miniaturisation of semiconductor based devices.
