15.13 Power supplies connected in parallel

The schematic diagram on the left is the same circuit as in Figure 15.30 of Understanding Physics except that a switch and three ammeters have been added and the internal resistances of the power supplies are not shown as separate components.

The PhET  allows internal resistance to be assigned to power supplies. If you use this construction kit to set up the circuit in the figure and observe the effects of using different values for E1E2, r1 and r2, you can check the results derived in this section of Understanding Physics.

Observe, particularly, that power will always be generated in the power supplies unless their emfs are identical.
