Chapter 12 Microscopic models of thermal systems: kinetic theory of matter

In this chapter, the thermal properties of macroscopic systems discussed in the previous chapter, are interpreted in terms of microscopic (molecular) models.  Particular attention is given to the ideal gas since all gases behave like ideal gases at low pressures.  A formalism is developed to enable statistical distributions of quantities like velocities, momenta and energies in ensembles containing large numbers of particles to be expressed.

In the final section of the chapter, some of the foregoing ideas are also applied to a simple model of a solid.
